The 1 pm #SXSW livestream We have entered a new era in which computers can learn, generate and operate independently, and at the same time, an entirely new computing paradigm is rapidly evolving that leverages quantum mechanics to solve seemingly impossible challenges.

I'm closing out Year 31 at #SXSW. I'm always happy when this even skews towards the hard sciences. We're about to see some amazing growth as new, powerful tools get moved to users. If we can manage to do it ethically, we're about to enter a fascinating age. Photo by Pawel Nolberton Unsplash

If you missed her #SXSW talk today, you should check it out. She's fantastic. And the shirt swipe at Zuck is ::chef's kiss:: amazing. Bluesky's CEO on the Future of Social Media:

I leaned heavily into the hard sciences this year at #SXSW. I also visited the German and EU delegation installations. Here's what I will tell you: US researchers are utterly heartbroken about the US losing its dominance in research. The EU and China are absolutely thrilled to fill that gap.

I will say, being here at #SXSW with a bunch of smart tech folks makes me much less concerned about these headlines. AI Designed Computer Chips That The Human Mind Can't Understand.

Tech should empower, not replace, human judgment. At #SXSW2025, Ian Beacraft & Jay Graber highlighted how AI & open protocols can put people back in control. The future isn't just about AI but how we shape it. Read more: buff.ly/GUcjlOl #AI #Innovation #FutureOfWork #DigitalTransformation

This should go virus, right?

From the Webb telescope's galaxy-shattering discoveries to Colossal's de-extinction breakthroughs, Day 3 at SXSW 2025 revealed how humanity stands at the threshold of understanding our cosmic origins and biological future.

Robots finally learn to navigate our messy world as "Living Intelligence" emerges. Here's what I learned on Day 2 at SXSW 2025:

Those Sunday morning #SXSW sessions are always tough because everyone loses their minds on Saturday night. (I did, too, but I was in bed at 8 pm because I'm old AF). Thank goodness the GermanHaus started early is all I'm saying. (May Day 2 wrap up coming soon. It was ALL ROBOTS.)

The #SXSW Livestream is legit this year. Today, you can watch Amy Webb's annual Tech Trends, see Issa Rae, The Last of Us Showrunners and cast, and Disney folks talking about world building: buff.ly/M8XbiYQ (You can check out the astronauts returning to the moon in yesterday's archive.)

SXSW 2025 Day 1 🚀 This year's all about hard sciences: 🚀 AI Shift: Small Language Models will transform industries. 🤖 Smarter Robots: Teaching robots new skills. ⚛️ Quantum Computing: Still far from real-world use. 💊 GenAI in Medicine: Speeding drug discovery.

Continuing my #SXSW tradition of seeing the nerdiest panels that have the absolute smallest waiting line to them. Hit the Hard Science, my nerds. (It's Quantum Computing day for me.)

SXSW 2025. So glad to be back in person after a few years living virtually! Starting off with my old stomping ground MIT Technology Review and its annual 10 Breakthrough Technologies! If you're at #SXSW, let's meet up and say hi!

I just finalized my Friday #SXSW panels and films: buff.ly/O0NpRT6 Quantum computing, GenAI and research, new technologies, and librarians fighting back against books bans. A good summation of what I'll be doing this year.

I would very much like there to be more McKenzie Scott news coverage and less Jeff Bezos news coverage.

Howdy, #SXSW friends. I just finished putting together my schedule for this year: buff.ly/gO5CgsJ So much AI, storytelling, and science (robots, quantum computing, space). I would love to meet up (drop a comment) or hear what you think is a must-attend!

There is a BIG caveat in this story that isn't in the headline. History sort of repeats itself with White House media ban | The Obama White House refused to let Fox News participate in a network pool rotation until other outlets came to Fox's defense. https://buff.ly/4gJA6uT #media #journalism

The speed is strategy, of course, ....Lawsuits and court orders move on a different timescale than this slash-and-burn approach. (At this pace, DOGE will have tapped into every last government server long before the Supreme Court even has a chance to weigh in.)

Tracking SXSW's evolution since '94, my survival guide (now my blog's second-most-read piece) has mapped this transformation, but the landscape keeps shifting. The last five years reshaped everything. What wisdom should we pass on? 🔗 https://buff.ly/3WU8JH9 #SXSW #DigitalCulture #Austin

Tamara Tunie spoke at Carnegie Mellon (her alma mater) today, and I'm here to tell you: She can tell a story. I had tears in my eyes twice and howled quite a bit. (My friend kept hitting my arm, but when I hear a good story, I will let it out.)

We have unchecked oligarch power destabilizing government. The world leaders are absolutely putting in place a contingency plan "the Republicans who spoke to WIRED had little to no idea what the proper chain of communication is supposed to be between agencies and the White House."

But this is the plan by the oligarchs to install teenager lackeys and criminals. They don't care about the law. “There is no legal basis for funds that have been apportioned to states to build projects being ‘decertified’ based on policy,”... https://buff.ly/4hrA1wO #technology #politics
