I've never worked with animals, but I remember 1 moment that was really eye opening for me was when I came across a dead magpie, and I saw it's partner clearly distressed and honestly looking like it was crying. Add to that the research on monkey empathy and what we know about dolphins/elephants.

You'd be surprised how intelligent animals in general typically are. Personally I think we tend to look at them the way slave owners looked at poc. It's an unfortunate part of the human animals nature to look down at things that don't look like us.

To be fair, in Australia Kevin Rudd gave free money to people on centrelink back in 2007 (or so) to ensure Australia was one of the only countries not to enter into the global recession knowing that the money would go back into the economy. Maybe he's trying to emulate that.

1) This 2.4 billion dollars is from government subsidies alone. You are talking about separate subsidies.
2) If they would rather not receive the subsidies, they could either refuse the subsidies or donate it straight back to Americans. They choose neither.
