The brief shutdown of TikTok in the US allowed many of us to start connecting under the hashtag #WorldTok and having calmer conversations about our lives. We're now starting to explore BlueSky as an alternative platform. Here's a Starter Pack to help us find each other: go.bsky.app/MasFBbc

Can anyone point me towards Rough-toothed dolphins (Steno bredanensis) research? I was in Madeira last year & these prehistoric looking, toothy cetaceans with their mottled pink & grey bellies, beautiful stripes & toothy underbites are absolutely captivating πŸ¦‘ blog.lobosonda.com/wp-content/u...

I just dropped my phone down a rabbit hole hole while I was flailing to take a photo of the buzzard taking off from a tree 10 metres away. The funny bit was my dog getting uber excited and chasing the buzzard from the ground. Don't think she's quite worked out the height difference πŸ˜‚

I can't believe I've just had a video chat with my best friend who is currently working in #Antarctica. It's a glorious day at Neumeyer III. I'd forgotten how blue the sky is there 🀩

I encourage everyone to read this article "2024 was the warmest year on record, and probably in the whole of human history – about 1.6Β°C warmer than the period before widespread industralisation." #climate

Quick question for #Guernsey folk. Do you want a dedicated Guernsey feed? E.g. I'm a Marine Science feed member. I pin the feed & can see everything happening in marine science. As a member if I use the dedicated hashtag &/or emoji to auto-post any relevant topics.

If you care about the future of Guernsey, you could stand for election as a Deputy in June 2025. We keen to support you. Book your free place at our 1 February 'Train to Campaign' event here: traintocampaigngsy.eventbrite.co.uk. #TrainToCampaign #WomenStandGsy

I'm really pleased the #Guernsey government is doing more to help prospective deputies prepare. Did you know there's a free Course for Prospective Election Candidates running until the end of February that gives an overview of government? www.ticketsource.co.uk/govgg/t-jzya...

This is absolutely fascinating. 9 stomachs? We still know so little about most beaked whales. I can't wait for the paper πŸ¦‘ news.mongabay.com/2024/12/scie...

I hope everyone is relaxing and enjoying their holiday break.

Ever get the urge to inflict violence on technology? My laptop has decided, for some unfathomable reason, that every time I type "cetacean" I mean "citation" and I only just caught it while preparing a talk πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ πŸ¦‘πŸ‹

I just realised I hate one of my friends because the utter *beep dedacted* saw a dugong and I not.

Christmas is approaching and I really, really want a replica dolphin skull, but at nearly $500 a skull or more than a grand for an orca I think I'll ask for a butterfly pinning kit instead

OMG this is such a cool PhD! If I was 20 years younger πŸ¦‘

I'm disproportionately stoked to hear that Orcas are wearing salmon hats again. Now we have the capability of drone surveying it'll be interesting to see what the orca do once they've finished with the salmon. Discard them? Eat them? πŸ¦‘

Great to have a global analysis, and for 4 large whale species. Even more importantly the authors have identified that full coverage of hotspots could be achieved by expanding management over only 2.6% of the ocean’s surface. That's definitely achievable

I know what I want for Christmas 🀩

I'm going through the photos from my last work trip: 1. Thank goodness for cameras with stabilisation πŸ“Έ 2. Whales move damn quick - I have far too many photos of empty ocean 🌊 3. You can always rely on birds to fly right across your field of view πŸ¦… 4 My lens for Northern Lights was well worth it 🌌

Representation matters. #PolarPride

Love this. I do feel the baffling question of why dolphins appear to control the world is a very real, and deeply disturbing, concern

I don't actually have the words to articulate the irresponsible this is. Even more baffling this was done by a biologist. Who absolutely knew better

Strong contender for Most Terrifying Creature

I've spent much of 2024 out at sea collecting data about cetaceans (dolphins, porpoises and whales). A common question I'm asked is; do you ever get bored seeing the same animals? Absolutely not. My soul sings. Every sighting fills me with joy and hope. #MarineLife πŸ¦‘

I noticed a bunch of new #Guernsey followers. I'm not terribly active here but I enjoy how welcoming, supportive and curious the community on bluesky is. I have no interest in any petty, sniping or "playing the devil's advocate" interactions esp. re local politics. Leave that for twitter.

WOOHOO! We finally saw the #AuroraBorealis aka the Northern Lights. I've even got some videos. This makes up for the terrible storms. While I know the science behind them, it is a spiritual experience that feeds the soul

In a nutshell (terrible pun intended) - most whales mate very carefully.

The irony of being in the Arctic Circle in such a good year for the Aurora Borealis and it being 100% cloud cover for the past week.

Oh now, this is fascinating

Good to know this has started up again. I do wonder why we tend to assign "human" motivations to marine mammals.

"The baseline sea surface temperatures are higher because of human-driven climate change, and El NiΓ±o amplifies these already high temperatures further, resulting in reefs experiencing greater heat stress overall," said Dr. Sara Cannon @secanno factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com....

Happy #EarthDay ! Did you know that oceans cover more than 99% of the Earth's living space - from the deepest submarine trench to colourful coral reefs, expansive seagrass meadows, and much more? πŸ“Έ Hippocampus histrix by Herwig Helsen / Guylian #Seahorses of the World

It's spring! Public perception is everything so let's look at an important food plant that has been denigrated as a Β£weed. I am, of course, talking about the #dandelion. My YouTube link explains why dandelions are important for #pollinators like #bees & #butterflies in #Guernsey youtu.be/itKzk9YTtTY
