"You don't deserve due process if you're a criminal" has got to be among the least "American" arguments the government has put forward in a century

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." - President Lyndon B. Johnson

Reiterating that what Trump is, is a large-scale abuser. When it’s looked at in that context, his decisions make a lot more sense and it’s a lot easier to guesstimate what he’ll do next.

What’s going on in America right now is called a shock and awe campaign.

Justice Sotomayor with a bone-chilling dissent today: “The implication of the govt’s position is noncitizens AND US citizens could be taken off streets, forced onto planes, confined to foreign prisons with no opportunity for redress…This Nation's laws is designed to prevent, not en-able, their rise.

I got over my imposter syndrome recently by internalizing the thought: have the confidence of a mediocre white man.

It was never about the tariffs.

I feel like there’d be more certainty plucking daisy petals. “He keeps the tariffs. He keeps the tariffs not. He keeps the tariffs….” 🌼

You know what you need for a general strike? Rent funds. Bail funds. Healthcare funds. Childcare funds. Viable tenant and homeowner unions. You know what you DON'T need? Sign up sheets.

NEW: Yesterday, the Justice Department sent armed marshals to warn former U.S. pardon attorney Liz Oyer not to disclose internal DOJ information during her Senate testimony. Today, Oyer is speaking out to condemn the DOJ’s actions and defend the rule of law.

Let’s be clear: Trump’s plan to fine migrants $998 a DAY and steal their property is NOT about border security. It’s about pushing fear-based rhetoric—and it’s giving fascism.

Men assess their own capacity to work a factory job with the same accuracy that they assess their chance of beating Serena Williams at tennis.

Last night in my newsletter, I wrote about an important court case you probably haven't heard about. An Alabama group, the Yellowhammer Fund, helps women go to states where abortion is legal to obtain one. They sued the state's AG for threatening to prosecute joycevance.substack.com/p/a-case-to-...

Lawyers have ethical obligations to courts regardless of what their bosses say. If a government lawyer is asked to violate their oath, they should resign. There is no excuse for caving to Trump.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

What are we even *doing* here if we allow the government to just snatch people off the streets and send them to death camps?

Trying to emotionally survive these news cycles each day requires some kind of severance simulation where you pretend like there’s a daily cutoff time for your brain when you just flip a switch to not remembering what you read, even if you’re dead sober.

It cannot be overstated how insane and dangerous this argument is. They're saying that the government can illegally abduct and imprison people—and even admit that it screwed up!—and then remove the ability of any court to intervene by shipping the victim to a foreign gulag.
