the issue is not just ICE. we can live free and safe. or we can have police like we have right now. we cannot do both

New* fave piece of Jesus’ Son lore just dropped. (*from BASS 1992 Contrib Notes) “I read the story in front of an audience in lowa City, and afterward a physician told me he'd been to a slide lecture at that same hospital… they'd shown a picture of the man with the knife sticking out of his head.”

Congrats, all!

"I’ve always bristled at the blanket ban on adverbs. They are a part of our language.… Why would we want to limit ourselves by eliminating an entire part of speech from our toolkit?" Agree. We too hate general proscriptions (and prescriptions) for writers. countercraft.substack.com/p/defending-...

If we had a functioning fourth estate, maybe someone could force Trump to explain why he let a "big-time drug addict" run half the government (or force Musk to explain why he introduced his children to a pedophile)

Not 100% agreeing (there's good stuff going on in SF), but this thread resonates with a lot of my gripes with the genre. I'm particularly pondering the failure to engage thematically, which is a deeper problem than shallow characters imo.

I've said this before, but the NYT ethicist seems really uninterested in ethics. Seriously. Every column I've read has been "who knows life is complicated, you're probably fine so feel good." (Yes, that's what's said here too.)

Same as it ever was with corporations. "The solution to any problem? Make every single person purchase our products!"

The same way a lot of people didn't realize how big the QAnon problem was until those fuckers literally stormed the capital, I fear we're a year or two away from a shocking discovery of just how many "seemingly normal" people have lost their minds "talking" with ChatGPT.

Pathetic low-energy loser move to sell it. A real "alpha" would smash or explode the tesla on live TV.

This has to be one of the most obliviously disastrous policy proposals since the Iraq War. It’s almost guaranteeing that crypto causes a financial crisis and then taxpayers bail out crypto companies. Crypto is just an elaborate scam—and this is its ultimate heist.

I guess you start to understand the wild AI predictions and panic among the tech set when you realize they were hoping it would kill off artists, journalists, and humanities majors and instead... the beast ate them.

I mean what other option was there beyond locking us inside? People didn't carry little surveillance devices in our pockets back then

Hey! I'm so glad you reached out. I'm actually at capacity / glued to phone / watching Musk and Trump eat each other alive, and I don't think I can hold appropriate space for you. Could we connect [later date or time] instead / Do you have someone who is less online you could reach out to?

I'm just glad one of these men has the nuclear codes and the other has all our personal data.

That "let them fight" jpg has never been more appropriate.

"If you want to fight fascism, go and win elections" doesn't really hit coming from people who keep losing elections to fascists

Wrote about @thelincoln.bsky.social's METALLIC REALMS, which combines a tale of literary rivalry with plenty of space opera. reactormag.com/book-review-...

It's a thoughtful review of what sounds like an interesting book!

THIS!!!!!!

I too am just way more interested in George Lucas’s attempt to blend his specific hyperfixations into a new story than the corporate attempt to turn that into a cohesive “universe”

"It’s a story as old as time: two artists equal parts friends and rivals; one destined for glory, the other destined to document a more successful peer." @tobiascarroll.bsky.social reviews Metallic Realms, a new novel dedicated to the golden age of the genre reactormag.com/book-review-...

has been said a million times already but polling universally shows that trump has negative approval on immigration now and abrego garcia has a lot to do with it

"It’s a space opera, a commentary on the craft of fiction, a story of literary rivalry, and an unexpectedly moving study of a friendship. These realms are vast, indeed." Thanks to @tobiascarroll.bsky.social for this lovely + thoughtful review! reactormag.com/book-review-... @reactorsff.bsky.social

I'm sure there're smart uses for AI in e.g. f/x, but this is a truly bleak view of cinema. Not even pretending there is anything like an artistic vision. Just change the entire tone, style, and content of a movie in "three hours" and pump the pablum to the public... www.vulture.com/article/gene...

Dying at anyone thinking of Frey as the "literary bad boy." He was last seen whimpering pathetically on Oprah when it was revealed all the "bad" things he did in his memoir were made up.

This is basically the standard GenAI use case. Someone hoping AI will let them pretend to be informed yet actually just wasting everyone's time with nonsense. www.semafor.com/article/06/0...

"The plan? Help a struggling restaurant get free publicity by telling credulous journalists the chef is ChatGPT."

Excellent #nabokovilia right off the bat in Lincoln Michel’s METALLIC REALMS

The three media professions with no standards for accuracy and where being consistently wrong is in fact rewarded are political pundit, sports commentator, and tech "journalist." The successful in each field realize the job is mindlessly boosting your team
