That isn't to say that the current difficulty shouldn't exist! Hell, I love just cranking a game I enjoy up to 11. But it was actually detrimental to their community and the story they were telling to not have optional difficulties that were lower.

I think if you actually want to examine a game that is the extreme of the discussion, GTFO is the game of choice. A game so difficult to complete that a tiny tiny fraction of the playerbase even came close and the studio has said they wanted to make their next game more accessible.

exactly one mod installed on Elden Ring and its just so that invaders are disabled because having a random high levels high geared player turn up to kill you at random points and not being able to put the game down when real life backend is just not a fun experience for me.
