Every time I see these stories I don’t only think about how much effort it is to defend every single program, I think how much it must infuriate the people who thought they could just sweep everything away to keep getting told no. Tiny wins are still wins

I know things are bleak and scary right now. But I promise you that you - yes YOU - can get through this. You don't have to fight all of this on your own. Find one person you can help, and help them. Make the life of one person better every day. Hold onto your joy. That's how we win.

Can't get enough of this pic of Jacques Cousteau in his undersea habitat in 1963. Ricard, red wine, Worcester sauce (!), Gitanes...

this is not universal but it is distressingly common among legacy media people. the idea that they have any duty to society or responsibility beyond getting clicks and clout is abhorrent to a sizable number of people at the top of this industry

1. A few years ago, people like me were widely attacked in the media for “declinism”. How could we fail to see that we were heading into a capitalist utopia, in which everything would keep getting better? This is a thread about what we could see that our critics could not. 🧵

It’s easier to claim something was “unprecedented” than to admit you saw the signs but chose to ignore them. 🕊️💙🦋

for a while Musk really did seem like the most relatable billionaire. yeah, if i had that kind of money I'd want to go to space and make sports cars, etc. Turned out that was just PR, and what he really wanted out of life was to be seen as funny by teenaged Nazis on the Internet

There are people who assume those with disabilities are faking. That we’re scamming the system somehow. That it’s “fun” to be disabled. They never seem to consider that most of us are faking being well. We put on a smile and a brave face & push through suffering that most could never comprehend.

Throwing it all away With not much to say Piling up in the box Knowing it’s not Going where it belongs Just so wrong Pushing down the lid To be rid Of responsibility Hands are clean Passing it down the line Someone else’s crime youtu.be/Ri5GHgsQ74Y?...

How did we get here? New article on the ShatterZone substack. I track how and why Elon Musk is trying to break the government and make himself CEO of the new United States. shatterzone.substack.com/p/how-the-fe...

On Feb 7, Bandcamp will be donating 100% of our proceeds to MusiCares to provide emergency aid for artists in need, partnering with A2IM, WIN, Harman, Lagunitas, Roland, Shure, Victrola, and Women in Music to amplify the effort. Mark your calendar & spread the word. bit.ly/4gt9ka4

Solidarity is not transactional. If you're supporting someone's human rights only out of the expectation they'll do the same, you don't understand solidarity. Everyone deserves human rights. Everyone, everywhere. And no one is free until we all have them.

Simulated reconstruction of February #Arctic sea ice thickness since 1901. Interannual variability and a decline in recent years. Information about this data set is available at doi.org/10.1175/JCLI.... Note that it is only updated through 2010 due to ERA-20C forcing.

If you are in danger unless you comply with a regime, you are in danger whether you comply or not

It doesn’t have to be this way. Nowhere is it inscribed upon the fabric of reality that control of the world must be ceded to the dumbest, crudest and cruelest among us. Nowhere is it written in adamantine that our happiness and the fate of our biosphere must depend on what the market will bear.

Newsletter: The DeepSeek situation is a moment that should fill Silicon Valley with shame, a monument to the lack of vision and herd mentality of the American tech industry. OpenAI and Anthropic have no moat, no business, no innovation, and I believe no future. www.wheresyoured.at/deep-impact/
