That’s been my experience as well. Like writing with chalk dust.

Love mine, too. Such a thoughtfully designed tool.

That is a weekend well-spent. I spy a cousin on that desk. Tell them their kin says hi from Northern Virginia. We miss NOLA!

Agreed. 80% of my collection is from pen swap. It’s a great community

Hey! My daughter did electric girls back when we lived there. She loved it!

Leuchtturm notebooks are great with FPs, and have hard covers. They make 80gsm and 120gsm papers for them.

That looks more like 'ghosting' to me. Hobonichi paper is pretty thin, so that's not unusual. Bleeding is when you see ink coming through the page.
comment in response to post
There you go. You have the paper part of the equation handled. Hobo paper quality is a little bit hit and miss this year (search Reditt for the whole story), leading to bleed through on some products. I have a ton of Midori notebooks and overall i think they're good quality.

Don't know what you're using the pens for or if you're able to choose your paper; if your paper is cheap copy paper (my work has this), then I'd suggest looking for a nib in <F> or <EF> to reduce bleeds. If you can choose, Rhodia balances cost/quality pretty well.

Dunno how different but it will be different. The wriiting experience will be pleasant as the preppy and kakuno both have good quality nibs and the pilot inks are well behaved. Paper is other part of equation. BPs and GPs will do well over a broader range of paper than FP.

Preppy great. Also Pilot Kakunos - cartridge pen for about $15. I got a couple for my teenage daughter for Christmas, along with a few different color ink cartridges and she loves them. Very easy to maintain. Good luck!

Love that design. I have a Targa, Myu, Elite, and Carene pens - all a variation of that theme

Big fan of Iroshizuku tsuki yo; also like BPC Ice Rink. Two very different blues, tho'

Heard. Clip on the section has people hot/cold on these pens. Agree getting hands on one b4 buying is a good idea. I tried one at DC pen show last yr and ended up with a Decimo <EF> as my first one. I don’t recommend unless you write rlly small. Good luck!

Pilot 743 <SFM>. Cartridge converter - easy to fill and clean. Springy nib and well-balanced posted or unposted. Much joy when writing.

I’ve heard about QC issues with these models, but to be fair, I can’t know the true failure rate bc I don’t know denominator. I see folks on Reditt posting about the challenges not infrequently. Agree that price point is great and I’d bet they are decent enough in QC to be reliable for most buyers.

Pilot Vanishing point, decimo /and fermo pens have click mechanisms; much cheaper - around $160 - $220. Amazon sells pilot pens; pay attention to seller. Can frequently find used on Reditt pen_swap sub. I have 2 decimos, 1 reg vp, 1 fermo. Great writers - nibs are fantastic - and solid builds.

That's a first-class roux!

Yep. Thanks!

I started out that way as well. And I still use fine nibs for most stuff. Lately I’ve branched out to larger, softer, and more flexible nibs in order to get more of the ink’s character on the paper. It’s a wild contrast but I enjoy being able to toggle between the experiences.

Is this the boathouse the WL rowing kids were going to use later this year?
comment in response to post
Brass Sport owner, too. It's a tank. Have no qualms carrying it with me everywhere. I had to tune the nib a little bit when I got it, but it was fine after that.

Waterman serenity blue is a very nice ink and reasonably priced. Diamine Oxford Blue is also easier on the wallet and nice to write with. Diamine balances cost/quality pretty well, I think. Avoid shimmer inks since you're looking for simplicity.

Can you share the brand? Would love this for my work.

Totally agree. Miss this place after leaving the city . The curtained booths! My kids loved those.

Congrats on the brilliant new pen! I live about 30 minutes from Betrams and haven't yet been. It's on my list of to dos. Fahrney's is a lot closer and I'm really looking forward to visiting once Drew and the new owners hit their stride.

Ambient New Orleans >> ambient anywhere else. Fun fact: Great local station WWOZ streams on the interwebs, so you can listen to great stuff anytime , anywhere!

Mondays call for something smooth and easy so Pilot Elite with Sailor Shikiori Shimoyo is on deck.

Fully support. A gal’s gotta have standards.

Why does a stub nib require writing cursive? I ask bc I have them and I print. Seems okay, but always willing to learn something new.

Answer some of these Qs and folks on this feed will generate a list of possibles that will keep you busy researching for a while. 😀

So, budget friendly, ease of use, good QC are your most important qualities? Also consider: What’s your use case? Do you have large or small handwriting? Do you have access to good paper or crappy paper? Left handed? Are you writing a LOT or just doing bulleted/outline type stuff?

Stay strong! I'm on the no buy list until the Baltimore Pen Show in March.

Beautiful pen/ink combination!

This was the smart plan, as it turns out....

Me too! I'm a fool for things like this, Elites, Myus, Shaeffer Imperials and PFMs, etc.

Started collecting in May 2024 and have 40 pens in a wide range across the cost spectrum; 100 inks, vast majority of which are 2ml-6ml samples. I have about 20 pens inked up and rotate among them frequently. I love to collect and swatch variety of ink colors but tend to write with the blue-greys.
