My kingdom for a judicial law clerk willing to no-reply and see what happens

Elon may be a business genius. Why should we care? Doesn’t mean he should be anywhere near government. Governing and business are different skills. I’m a decent policy lawyer (I think) but it would be unethical for me to represent you in a personal injury trial. I know my limits. So should he.

"Still, the firings have bewildered federal employees like Powell. If their mission is to reduce government waste, she said, it doesn’t make sense to get rid of auditors like her tasked with detecting fraud." www.nola.com/news/louisia...

On some level, Andrew Cuomo abused all New Yorkers with his corrupt and evil and self-serving ways. He’s trying to do it again and we won’t let him.

It's weird how everyone in the world knows a Nazi salute when we see it, with the notable exception of journalists and their editors.

One of the biggest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world just lost $1.4 billion (with a B) to a hack. This is 5x as much as the previous largest exchange hack in history.

U.S. District Judge Dale Ho won’t dismiss the indictment against Eric Adams just yet. Instead, he appoints PAUL CLEMENT as amicus to argue whether it’s proper to dismiss the indictment under Rule 48a, among other points. This is gonna be good! storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

(Guardian) - French far-right leader Jordan Bardella has cancelled his speech at the US Conservative Political Action Conference conference after former Trump aide Steve Bannon appeared to make a Nazi salute at the end of his speech last night .. www.theguardian.com/world/live/2...

I don't think people really get how these employee purges are just going to break the culture of public organizations for a very long time.

Here in Illinois, ten years ago we saw the consequences of a rampant ideological gutting of government. It genuinely harmed people. Our citizens hated it. Trust me – I was elected based in part on just how much they hated it.

Mild freakout over USPS news in the relatively small community of folks who sell individual Magic: The Gathering cards. One of many business models that could not exist without low postage costs. www.reddit.com/r/mtgfinance...

May their memories be a blessing. 🇮🇱

Not good news, but needs to be said: Hamas claimed that Israel killed the Bibas children and their mother in an airstrike. Forensic examination of the corpses reveals the kids were murdered and that Hamas didn't even send back the mother, but a random body. Depravity piled upon lies.

Taking a short break from non-stop crises to read this new-ish paper from Liscow & Fox, and it is EXCELLENT. For the very, very, very rich (the top 0.1% of wealth-holders, those with ~$62 M and up), roughly HALF of their real-world income escapes taxation under the current tax code. That's wild.

"The senior US Republicans tasked with dismantling Joe Biden’s signature climate policy have enjoyed an investment boom of more than $130bn in the areas they represent thanks to the former president’s law." www.ft.com/content/e627...

Gift link. The actual story of the shackled people being deported without even being told where they were being taken — maybe to countries where they’d face torture or death — while their terrified children cried.😢 The White House posted that pic with “ASMR” tag. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/18/w...

History will correctly draw a direct throughline between McConnell, Trumpism, and… whatever comes next. I doubt he will be remembered kindly. (@mikeduncan.bsky.social made this point very clearly, with historical parallels, on a recent Know Your Enemy episode.) www.politico.com/live-updates...

Here’s the plaque he was protesting. Appalling use of public space to show political dominance.

Boy the Tea Party folks are gonna be mad when they hear about this one

you love to see it. gov hochul comes out strong.

Completely afactual statement from DOT. Speaking for New Jersey, research has consistently shown car commuters are fewer and richer than transit riders.

Scoop --> Trump-Musk cuts just resulted in the firing of numerous top researchers at NIH's center for combating Alzheimer's, sources tell me. They predict big setbacks to fighting dementias. This cause was once championed by *Republicans.* Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1917...

The MTA has already filed to stop the feds from baselessly and illegally pulling congestion pricing approvals.

New York should keep congestion pricing up & running while @govkathyhochul.bsky.social & AG Tish James sue the feds over this action

Given that the MTA's already sold bonds off congestion pricing, this feels like a real "Trump to NYC: Drop Dead" moment

Friendly reminder that the real political divide isn’t between parties, it’s between informed and disengaged

DOGE is running a libertarian playbook with good-government messaging. The tension between the two will resolve one way or another; probably when important stuff starts breaking.

We can and should make DOGE and Elon into objects of ridicule but we lose in the long term if we don’t also explain why what they *have* cut matters. Do Americans like being the victims of financial scams? Kicking people off trial cancer treatments? Defunding children’s hospitals?

“Why should you be prosecuted for a crime that somebody else… noticed?”

The crudeness of the boilerplate fake performance complaints in these mass firings has an unsettling echo of how the banks in the financial crisis couldn't begin to prove they owned the loans but got away with foreclosing on people's homes with forged or missing documents anyway

One of Trump’s closing promises in the campaign was to solve the housing crisis. Not clear how this will help.
