@aoc.bsky.social - you said something several years ago that helped shape me. I think you called it “The Myth of Scarcity.” I’d be grateful if you could articulate this idea a little more. I feel like it’s a galvanizing concept. I’d like to write a paper about it. Thank You for taking up the fight.🙂

It seems like a little thing in retrospect, but when President Biden relied mostly on individual small amount donations at first, it made me feel like we ALL mattered. Moving forward, I’d love if the Democratic Party went back to that approach.

I died when I got to “…post that you post after sundown on Friday” 😂 Well said @mmasnick.bsky.social

Right? So you knew he was gonna do a pretty decent Gollum/Sméagol. But I liked that not only did he nail the other characters as well, I remember a few times when his take on Gollum/Sméagol was different than the movies.

I’m both an audiobook and LOTR nerd. I used to fall asleep to the Rob Inglis versions when I was a kid. But then I got the Andy Serkis versions last year when they were on sale on Audible. Listening to the different interpretations is like different productions of Swan Lake or something. Both great.

We actually have a crypto factory back home in Murphy, North Carolina. The WSJ did a couple stories on it this summer. It’s a nightmare. It uses as much as $100,000 in electricity per hour and the community sees no economic benefit. In fact, electric bills have increased over 20% to cover its costs.

That’s based. You seem hella dope. The message means a lot more coming from someone of your caliber.

Thank You! Oh, wait… God I’m terrible at being a delinquent.

I sent screenshots to Dad and he texted back: “Wow. Spawn thy name is Douche. Now quit phone surfing and go do your homework.”

@neilhimself.neilgaiman.com you’re talking about the Spawn guy? I’ve gotta tell our Dad. While he was still in high school, he met with McFarlane about producing a line of sports figures. McFarlane said it couldn’t be done. A couple years later, Todd’s new line of sports figures looked identical.

Yeah but you still gotta watch out for those darned Somali Salamanders - aka the Somalimanders. You’re right when you say there aren’t many left. But then, you know what they say: “Dead Somalimanders tell no ‘tails’.”

Our Dad took our Mom blackberry picking for their anniversary in July and just the image of them arm and arm with their little buckets makes me smile. Then Dad made pie filling but he needed a few more so Mom picked some up at Aldi for $1.95. Those and blueberries were way cheaper than Walmart etc.

Okay - now I get why “the books going to paperback” gets mentioned. The first two make sense. It’s like a signing bonus and then your salary for the season.

I definitely overthought that one 😁 I would’ve guessed “Publishing/Licensing.”

There’s a guy on Amazon who does these brilliant breakdowns of NFL offenses. They’re so intricate that he might only do one, maybe two teams per year. What’s interesting is that kindle and softcover are both $25. Yet I’d think printing costs would have to lay waste to his revenue though.

It reminds me of investing in the commodities market. 😄 “You’ve ruined us! Don’t you know the bottom has completely fallen out of the zombies market?!?”

Exhausting seems like the perfect word. There are people who, in my mind, are like legends. And then I hear them mention that they live in an apartment in a not great area, and while that’s certainly not something I’d ever disparage, it feels like it’s got to be frustrating for them.

So ebooks work really differently from print! And then I imagine audiobooks work differently from either either of those two, considering you’ve got to pay v/o talent, studio time, etc. This is great Tobias - thank you so much for taking the time to explain it!

Jon, thank you for sharing that. It is bleaker than I would’ve expected.

This is a rookie question: what exactly is an advance? Is it kinda like what publishers think the minimum sales will be so worst case scenario they break even? Is it like a signing bonus in free agency?

That’s such a narcissistic, gaslighting, dick move to claim to be “personally offended.” No he’s not. And if he is, then he’s garbage and should resign immediately lest a low flying airplane send him into apoplexy. I wonder if he’s also “personally offended” by the subject of streaming royalties. 🤔

Okay, rock came from blues (obviously); but was it Miles that brought the concept of introducing brass into rock, thus remaking rock/making funk?

Lol - rename Tweets ‘Xit-Pops’?

That’s really interesting. I had an English lit teacher who happened to be from France and she was REALLY into Miles Davis. She’d met him, I think she said, three times. But she used to say “🇫🇷🥐you want to understand writing, you need to understand Miles Davis.🥖🇫🇷” (lol - that’s her French accent.)

So did the synthesizer and those type of electronic instruments come out of funk? I’m thinking songs like Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious.” I think the Parliament Funkadelic was pretty electronic too? But then I think of Hot Chocolate and they were a fusion of classic rock instruments + electronic

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you’re staying strong at this terrible and tough time. Now don’t you hold anything back. You grieve as hard as you want - your husband deserves that. And don’t let anyone tell you how long the grieving period lasts - you’ll know when it’s time. God Bless, Ma’am. 🙏💜😔

I keep referencing rock instead of funk, but I like the story that when Tom Petty did “Full Moon Fever” with Jeff Lynn as producer, they recorded every single instrument and voice track separately and then mixed the song. Another one is how George Michael kept chasing “Careless Whispers” (Netflix)

I heard a story once - I think it was Steve Gorman (drummer for Black Crows). He said when Guns ‘N’ Roses recorded, Axl Rose demanded the song be laid down as one take. No edits allowed. I feel like that speaks to your point about the disconnect between playing live and producing a track.

I love that America be stressin’ over the “Homo/NoHomo” conundrum while up top on the cover the prequel to 9/11 gets like a 3-word blurb. WTF - and parents say OUR generation has issues?!?

It’s kind of a non-sequitur, but we read “The Accidental Tourist” in one of my classes, and the part I wrote about was when one of the brothers says he never liked sex because it was too messy. My take was the transformation of the crank from socially awkward bounder to social media influencer.

The ol’ “Not Guilty Because I’m Stoopid” defense is the go-to for the modern police state. If the same people who put their efforts toward anything anti-trans instead focused their energies toward abolishing qualified immunity, our world would be a far more just and noble place. But alas…no.

That’s how it is there, too. The smoke from the Canadian wildfires are reaching all the way down there so it hasn’t even gotten to 90-degrees Fahrenheit all summer.

How’s the weather been this summer? My folks live up in the mountains of North Carolina/North Georgia. When I went home after the semester, I’ve never seen so many mushrooms. They only moved here a couple years ago, but it’s still like nothing I’ve seen before. Not a lot of rain — just wicked humid.

When I first got here, I got some really rude comments of the “go back to Twitter” variety. But the only time I was ever on Twitter was a class assignment Winter Semester. I ended up in the hospital. They thought it was a heart attack. I’m 21. I’ve never seen anything like it. It plumbed the depths.
