I made a map of ridings represented by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s cabinet members (ministers and secretaries of state included). I created it quickly over on @canadianpolling.bsky.social‘s excellent map page, so I hope all the ridings are correct.

(To become speaker of the Legislature.)

Workers with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees voted to strike—and with some big numbers. 80% vote turnout, over 90% in favor. Locals 001, 002, 003, 004, 005, 006, 009 and 012, which represent a very big chunk of Government of Alberta workers, all involved.

Surprisingly the last-minute replacement for Randy Boissoneault in Edmonton Centre, Eleanor Olszewski, got a cabinet seat, while 'star candidate' Corey Hogan in Calgary did not.

Alberta's industrial price on emissions was set to raise to $110 a ton in 2026. You might see this freeze as a deliberate challenge to Mark Carney, since it invites a federal measure to make up the difference.

“Bill 54 would bring corporate interests closer to political power.” Check out my comments on the UCP's efforts to have even more big money influencing government policy in Alberta in this PressProgress story. pressprogress.ca/alberta-to-l...

Edmonton's city councilor for O-day'min, Anne Stevenson, announced her re-election bid on Sunday, promising a continued focus on resolving Edmonton's housing problems.

Danielle Smith shaking her fists at the feds is not new. But Doug Ford shaking his fist back is a bit of a development

Interesting updates (and a bit of speculation) from Edmonton municipal politics commentator Troy Pavlek on Edmonton's new conservative party:

In this week's Progress Report newsletter: everyone's breaking up—even the NDP! But how real is the threat of Alberta separatism?

Just in: Don Davies named interim NDP leader

New from me: an assault trial is underway for an ex-Edmonton police officer who was caught on camera repeatedly kicking a man in the head during an arrest edmontonjournal.com/news/crime/o...

Measles in Alberta on 2025-05-05: • 265 cases • +1 in Edmonton zone • +3 in Calgary zone • +3 in central zone • +48 in south zone

The cost of virtually everything rose sharply in Canada after the pandemic. One big exception: child care.

Today marks 10 years since Rachel Notley’s Alberta NDP swept the province and defeated the 43-year old Progressive Conservative government to win the 2015 election. On the eve of this anniversary I spent part of the weekend at the party’s annual convention in Edmonton. 🤠

Ongoing measles outbreaks across Alberta now total 265 cases. That marks the most in the province since 1987.

Calgary's police chief abruptly resigned today for still-unknown reasons.

Measles cases in Alberta on 2025-05-01: • Total of 193 • +1 in north zone • +3 in central zone • +19 in south zone

A new crowdfunding campaign provides an opportunity for folks to support deposed AHS CEO Athana Mentzelopoulos—and a platform for several notable doctors and politicians in their continuing campaign against "CorruptCare." The latest from Jeremy Appel:

In the final days of April’s federal election, representatives from several of Alberta’s largest unions rallied at the Alberta Legislature to urge their members to commit to a “Common Front”—and lend a hand to the struggling New Democrats.

The Gillenium continues! The Alberta Federation of Labour reports that Gil McGowan has been re-elected for another two year term as AFL president.

We've got a bonus pod for you this week, about this weekend's other 'federal' election: it's AFL convention time once again and Gil McGowan is up for re-election. Is today the final day of the Gillenium?

Canadians using Twitter/X are being bombarded by misleading right-wing posts designed to boost Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and tarnish the reputation of Mark Carney. The FT’s analysis finds a growing volume of that misinformation is coming not from Russia or China, but the United States.

It would be really nice if one of these big news stories platforming Alberta separatists would mention that the separatist party founded by the Wexit people in 2020 was dissolved in February 2025 because they were too disorganized to properly file their financial returns with Elections Canada.

While the 'conservative donation' may be a bit of cheap shot—sources told us that was probably just a convention ticket McLean had to purchase do to her job—working with "one of the preeminent management-side lawyers" is, as the kids used to say, a bit sus

Here's a fine article from Zak Vescera at the Investigative Journalism Foundation examining this year's crowd of third-party election advertisers. A lot of right-wing money, as usual

🇨🇦🙃 The optimistic projections for the Liberals in Calgary and Edmonton took me by surprise in this election. The Liberals are usually not this competitive in Alberta and, until Carney turned around his party’s fortunes, they were bracing for a total wipeout. daveberta.substack.com/p/who-will-b...

Some rare federal politics content from us: On this week's Progress Report podcast, we chat with possibly Alberta's smartest political commentator, Dave Cournoyer, and then possibly Alberta's smartest elected official, Blake Desjarlais.

"Albertans looking to get their 'elbows up' against MAGA may identify the MAGA threat now in plain sight in their own province: armed seizure of people deemed undesirable by the state and their rendition into incarceration without due process." #Alberta #Canada #Drugs #Policing #Incarceration

From her big splashy NYT profile ... Alberta premier Danielle Smith proudly talks about "leading the way" on policy targeting trans kids' access to gender-affirming health care. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/w...

Danielle Smith gets the New York Times treatment as "the closest thing Canada’s conservative movement has to a MAGA ally" www.nytimes.com/2025/04/14/w...

We've got a banger federal election pod with special guests Blake Desjarlais and Dave Cournoyer coming your way later this week. Stay tuned!

On this week's belated (sorry!) episode of the Progress Report podcast, Euan Thomson gives us an update on the drug poisoning crisis. Also, Jeremy and Euan explain why they're at odds with a Liberal star candidate in Calgary who was implicated in last year's brutal crackdown on Palestine protestors.

Here's an odd bit of trivia for you: the private home care provider Nurse Next Door, which was recently & briefly implicated in allegations of scabbing during the education support workers strike—they ultimately changed course and did not scab—was founded by Vancouver mayor Ken Sim. Small world.

Frostbite and frostbite amputation statistics were a critical metric last year for evaluating the impacts of policies involving unhoused people. But AHS told us today, after several weeks of inquiries, that they will not give us the frostbite statistics from 2024.

But renewables face stiff government restrictions, which could hamper the idea, @drewanderson.bsky.social reports thenarwhal.ca/alberta-sola...

Forward Canada, the anti-Conservative third party advertiser that Zain Velji from The Strategists is mixed up in, is producing podcast-like YouTube shows, something you don't see from these groups too often. The latest is about CBC funding, which Forward has been running a petition campaign on:

New report from ACWS finds nearly 32,000 people were turned away from Alberta shelter's due to a lack of space last year, with 40% of them being children. That's a new provincial record. #yeg #yyc #ableg acws.ca/strength-in-...
