Not-unrelated-to-current-events reminder that the #ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system is an investment of your taxpayer dollars in a system that will save lives and mitigate damage in the event of an earthquake.

Key takeaway from DOGE: There’s less government fraud/waste than expected.

The #earthquake this morning near Friday Harbor Washington was big enough and had shaking intense enough to set off the #ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system! It's great to see this exciting alerting system working, especially being tested on small quakes that don't hurt anyone! Quick 🧵

Despite being a few years old, highly recommended watch for helping you understand what the National Debt is, what it isn't, and how the conservative party is weaponizing the concept against any and all projects that benefit the American people through misunderstanding. youtu.be/yq_E3HquRJY?...

Take a break, and try some doomsquirreling in this lovely collection!

Just gonna sit.back and fredmeyer it from a distance.

Still searching for someone whopronounces "papayas" "PAPA YASSS!"

This is, by the way, why I'm pursuing chaplaincy. The moral injury, lack of mental health and spiritual support, and burnout already rampant in the emergency management field led me to chaplaincy, and I firmly believe every agency should have an interfaith chaplain on staff for employee support.

This is moral injury, by the way. Being forced out of your community-serving job. Being forced to choose to leave or be fired. Being forced to choose to stay and work for a corrupt regime. Being forced to do the work of those who were fired. All of this is mental, emotional, and spiritual injury.

Gonna get some ants so high with this antacid 🐜

If you're looking for fantasy escape into an actual play #ttrpg podcast with the most delightful people, I highly recommend Spout Lore. Fantastic storytelling, world-building, characters, and amazing comedy. Just all-around delightful.

“What fascists tried to make the government smaller?” is apparently a pro-Trump talking point. If you rephrase that slightly as “what fascists try to destroy a strong independent civil service and replace it with cronies,” the answer is…all of them

Something mist-ical is happening this morning!

One thing I learned in my American Public school education is that one of America's founding principles is that they stand up to tyranny. It doesn't side with it and bully its victims.

Sending all my loaf to those still trying to do good in this crazy world. I've kneaded a productive distraction lately. Fortunately, this one makes the apartment smell great.

We really need to do more to ensure "separation of corporation and state."

If I might chime in... This is the absolute fucking worst timeline.

NOAA in Your State & Territory Highlights have been compiled in PDF format for every state plus DC, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands. www.noaa.gov/legislative-...

Inspired by talk of how we can better educate our students & those around us on what NOAA is and does, I've begun crafting an online resource here: kouya.has.arizona.edu/NOAA-overvie... Partial screenshot below. I'm likely missing content, so ping me if you notice something that should be included!

I’m all for folks doing the blackout day! Let’s try every kind of activism! Everything is worth doing! I just don’t think you should give this dude that’s “organizing” it any of your money cause he’s absolutely a grifter.

Me, *happily* going about life as a public servant trying to mitigate future damage from earthquakes and volcanoes to the people of my state, and responding to emergencies, while watching this Adminstrarion tear down systems and people in place to study, monitor, and mitigate these hazards.

Today marks 24 years since the Nisqually #Earthquake. This was Washington’s most recent damaging earthquake. Today, let’s remember this event, and think about what we have done to be more prepared for future earthquakes. 🧵 We’ll share some memories from WA EMD staff – please reply with yours!

Opt out tomorrow!

Wave goodbye 🌊👋 (But seriously, this fucking sucks.)

HOL(e)Y Tomatoes!!

Including the tsunami warning centers.

This. And please wait faster.

Bottom line: The intentional loss of exceptional scientists and other terrific public servants at NOAA leaves our country less safe and more vulnerable.

Co-sign.

Not just deserve. Weather monitoring, disease management, and food safety are services we pay for from the government that are being stolen from us.

Hey have you noticed the earthquakes our state has had lately? This is what we mean when we say "Washington is Earthquake Country." While these aren't big quakes, they're a "friendly reminder" we have the potential for larger quakes. What do you need to know? What can you do? 🧵
