@thiago-barbosa.bsky.social ‘s book is truly an excellent introduction to the first female Indian anthropologist, Irawati Karve (1905-1970). Her work challenges both colonial academia and the current Hindutva view. I look forward to learning more.

Writing “Iru: The Remarkable Life of Irawati Karve” was as joyful as it was hard. How can one fit a whole life, with all its contradictions, into a few hundred pages? Now, I am looking forward to talking about our book with readers, friends, and scholars in India.

Brave New World. The US sliding down into an authoritarian oligarchy.

Check the hot new piece by @thiago-barbosa.bsky.social and Urmilla Deshpande. Such a good read on the dark history of German anthropology!

Some may know Irawati Karve for Yuganta, her remarkable essays on the Mahabharata. Others, for her pioneering work in anthropology. In 'Iru', Urmilla Deshpande and @thiago-barbosa.bsky.social sketch out a compelling portrait of Karve's achievements and complex legacy.

Unsolicited writing advice, #17171617: Don't just write. Read books. Watch films. Look at paintings and sculpture. Play games. Go to plays. Listen to music. Think about how these things make you feel. Making art is a two-way stream. To make art, you have to consume art.

How did global anthropological debates on race & (anti-)racism shape understandings of caste? My latest paper examines this question by exploring the transnational ties between Indian & German anthropologists (Ambedkar, I. Karve, Boas & E. A careful review of our book "Iru". I'm so glad to see the book resonating -- and pushing the difficult discussions on racism and gender in science and, specifically, anthropology : frontline.thehindu.com/books/irawat...

My 1st book is out! My friend (& acclaimed fiction writer) Urmilla Deshpande & I wrote “Iru”, a novel-shaped biography about Irawati Karve, the 1st woman to work as a sociologist and anthropologist in India. Irawati’s life was remarkable in many ways: 🧵(a short thread)

I’m happy to share the good news that I've just started a postdoc position at Leipzig University! 😀 I’m thrilled to join a team of anthropologists with a common commitment to societally relevant and politically response-able research.
