While I’m cautiously optimistic (emphasis on “cautiously”), I suspect we’ll get something similar as with Deadly Shadows: small levels and loading screens, seeing how this is also coming out on Quest standalone. Hoping that I’m wrong about this, though.

Fingers crossed!

Erm… you may want to get off it pronto. It may not be altogether safe, on account of small vents and catastrophic chain reactions.

Other than graphics (2D->3D) and inventory management, are there other aspects of the game you’re hoping to improve on?

That is not a nice thing to say, friend. You could choke on that clown, man.

Cheers for the info. There are some games in genres I don’t particularly like that I still enjoy for their personality and vibe, and this could be one of them. (I enjoyed the goofy quasi-JRPG Anachronox at the time.) The video essay definitely made me take notice (I’m okay with being spoiled.)

I enjoyed Persona 3 and 4 more, because I could make choices that influenced how I felt about the characters in the world, which FF barely ever had. But on the whole, I'm more of a CRPG guy, and there it's especially Planescape and Disco Elysium - which are miles from what JRPGs seem to be.

In the handful of Final Fantasy games I've played, I never enjoyed the combat, and obviously that's a huge part of them. What I like in RPGs is mostly choice and freedom, and when there is turn-based combat, I like it to be more along the lines of the early Fallout games.

I love a lot of what I hear and read about this game, but then I remember that I’ve never much enjoyed the JRPG gameplay loops, which this one seems to embrace. Would you say it’s still worth checking out for the story, world and art?

(Looking at that post, I can't help but think that an edit button would be nice...) 😘

What are the visual improvements that GRAND-MotherVR brings to the table? Definitely looking forward to returning to Sevastopol - and Nostromo - in VR before long...

Switzerland is more in a coma most of the time, but it can afford keeping the machines on for a long time. (Hi from someone in Switzerland who grew up watching M*A*S*H.)

I think you were right. I can see how some might like where the series goes, but IMO it completely lost track of what made the first two seasons and the novel good, instead going for an infuriating mix of faux grimness, sentimentality and go-girl pop feminism.

I find this one interesting but not necessarily enjoyable: it feels too much like conscious imitation of a style, which, even though it’s done well, keeps me at a distance. Curious to hear more from the players about how it felt to play this.

I have a soft spot for the film. It got me through a flight where I had food poisoning and felt sick as a dog.

Unavowed is probably the one I remember most, but also Shivah and the Blackwell games.

If you were to develop it, let me know: I’d love to contribute some barks. 😁

You're joking, but I like the idea of an Elizabethan stealth game in which you're a playwright by day, actor by night, and in between you're an agent for the Crown (that part still needs some work), and all the conversations and barks are in iambic pentameter. "'Twas but a rat. I will return anon."

1, luckily. And it’s been like that more or less from the start, with the Oculus Rift. I can count the times I felt unwell in VR on one hand.

I like the series’ spectacle, but I like it better when it’s playful rather than epic. More Heist, less Saving the World. That vibe was IMO lost in Dead Reckoning, at least much of the time, and I’m expecting the same of Final Reckoning.

It's a shame these are Switch and PlayStation only, but if they were to release, say, Hollow Knight and Outer Wilds, I'd be very, very tempted.

I've still got a bunch of physical releases from the 1980s and 1990s, and looking at how much of my space is taken up by books and DVDs and the like I'm glad that pretty much everything is released digitally these days - but for the special games I'll always be there for a good physical release.

Seid Ihr nicht alle viel zu jung, um Alan Alda zu kennen? Oder hat jemand von euch die gesammelten Folgen von M*A*S*H von den Grosseltern geerbt?

I’d have to rewatch the film, but I’d definitely say that Orlok’s threat in the recent film is more clearly shown in the impact he has than in himself.
comment in response to post
I’m not sure I’d consider Murnau’s Orlok threatening. He evokes this odd mix of revulsion and pity as he scampers through the city with his coffin.

The ESC, that is. Not sure how the European Research Council fits into all this.

I may be wrong, but i think there are a lot of (especially middle-class?) people who are comfortably progressive when it comes to LGBTQI+, but who want to keep what they’d call politics far away from the ERC. And they wouldn’t see any disconnect there.

I may be wrong, but I suspect the calls for kicking out Israel got it a lot of sympathy from a wide range of people who’d call themselves, and the decision not to kick them, apolitical.

I have very fond memories of the Alpha Centauri manual.

To be fair, Ultima died while it still included maps and trinkets in the box. And I’m saying this as someone who still owns the Dragon Edition.

I’ve seen people claim that Trump is basically Luke Skywalker and that progressives are the true Empire. At this point, I can’t even say whether that’s a sign of irony, malfunctioning AI or a complete mental breakdown.

Yeah, but how did Voltaire arrive at this conclusion? There’s definitely a story there!

I also found much of the praise overblown, but I still found it reasonably enjoyable and successfully leaning into some of the past strengths of the franchise. But yeah, I don’t think it’s quite the “We’re back, baby!” moment many want it to be.
