I think you’re right but also that other blue states (WA, MN) don’t have this problem. It’s more an indictment on CA Dems imo.

The conservatives made slop for rubes and it paid off! We shouldn’t be stuck thinking we aren’t making slop or it isn’t for rubes

It’s insane. Ideally they’d be limited to like things that can’t be handled normally (constitutional amendments, electoral systems). Instead you’ve got to read up about how much to tax real estate when it’s used to run a dialysis center.

The lesson of the 2016 election was not Trump’s strength but the weakness of the Republican part in general. For media people who have committed to both-sidesism it means they have to assume Trump is really strong!

The line about hoping Missouri votes to be free but waking up finding out Illinois is a space state just feels like such a relevant experience!
Like you can imagine those people hoping to get a slightly bigger senate majority to pass a stronger bill to slightly weaken slavery just like we do today!

One thing that gets sanded off in popular history is just how possible an alternate history seemed to people at the time. Like the modern assumption that slavery was going to die off is not at all reflected in the speech!
