If the GOP reconciliation bill passes, ICE gets through FY2029: - $45 billion for detention, on top of the current annual budget of $3.4 billion - $14.4 billion for transportation and removal, on top of the current annual budget of $750 million - $8 billion for hiring/retention - Billions more.

I genuinely cannot believe how many Democrats are spending their energy on destroying Mamdani when the GOP is trying to turn ICE into a full on secret police by drastically raising their budget

The Right really is in disarray because they cannot seem to figure out if they should push “Zohran Mamdani is going to bring Sharia Law” or “Zohran Mamdani treats his wife with too much equality” as a smear campaign, so they are doing both.

This is beyond disgusting. People (leaders in my own party?!) are just out there fucking smearing the Democratic nominee for mayor because he is Muslim!!!!!!!

Big ups to all Schumer’s constituents who made calls and demonstrated today demanding this.

I don't know anything about him but somebody named Gian Jones is running to primary this Gillen who clearly needs a primary

We are dismantling American higher education & scientific research & health care & all the other things to fund concentration camps

If congressional Dems shouldn't talk about or vote for impeachment because it won't pass, they shouldn't talk about or vote for anything because they don't have to votes to pass anything, and definitely don't have the votes to override a veto. But none of them say that, it would obviously be absurd.

Idk something tells me there may have been signs 🤷🏾‍♀️

Sen. Hawley a yes on exactly the thing he says we can’t be doing

"Daaaaaaamn, Daniel! Back at it again with the white supremacy!"

This is some truly cynical scolding We should never fight to justify never fighting People are going to die and you only want to scold the people who want to fight We’re done with this cynical learned helplessness

This is good as far as it goes If they had been denying UC all of the time we wouldn’t be in this situation right now

I can't tell if it's because I'm too NYC focused but does it feel like the news cycle spent more time crashing out on the fact that NYC picked a brown Muslim dude as is primary candidate then it did on a right wing extremist who shot 2 Minnesota legislators killing one, her husband and dog?

Why do politicians keep demanding Mamdani do things he does all the time? Like what's even the discourse here?

I don’t get people who dismiss some of the few options the Democrats have as performative as if there’s no room for performance in politics.

In addition to the pettiness, Barrett's response to Jackson is embarrassingly thin and built on rhetorical flourishes, as if this is the first universal injunction ever and it's about a minor technical point of law rather than the President violating the Constitution to kidnap and expel citizens.

Iowa water problems cause real risks for pregnant women and infants. Unacceptable. www.kcci.com/article/iowa...

the courts were NEVER going to save us, no amount of nation-wide injunctions would have done that. but we're still allowed to be mad when they curtail their own power for the first time in decades to make way for fascism.

During McCarthyism, they went after individuals to force their agenda, now they're going after entire institutions. The Trump administration is doing everything they can to reverse all progress toward creating a higher education system assessable to all. We must fight back. #DefendHigherEd

Everyone talks about the bizarrely psychosexual "Daddy Trump" thing but I think that a big part of this is that as Trump physically declines and his actual awareness and control over the administration becomes more doubtful, the need grows to make an image of him as being a Jupiterean figure

Via "One First," my longer take on #SCOTUS's ruling in the birthright citizenship cases. TL;DR: The short-term significance may well be blunted by the answers to two procedural Qs the Court didn't address. It's the broader implication (the death of the legal process school) that's especially grim:

I know I’ve said this several dozen times, but right wing lunatics frankensteined together unrelated Bible verses to create “the antichrist” and a description of what he would look like, and then the guy fucking showed up and they love him.

The Democratic primary for NYC Mayor was not about Israel-Palestine, but that wasn't for a lack of trying by Cuomo and the media establishment. The thing is, they failed to tar Mamdani as an extremist for his pro-Palestine views, and there are lessons to take from that. Here's my analysis:

Ryan’s statement makes clear that the fed government had threatened to withhold unrelated university funding & student visas in order to coerce his resignation All individual university leaders now have targets on their backs

Yesterday I wrote the following to my member of congress, Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan about her vote to table Rep. Green's impeachment articles.

Okay time to raise some money for @marisakabas.bsky.social Sean Casten is a bitch It's even worse than that: @seancasten.bsky.social is Trump's bitch

this anecdote is also just completely off point and weird and useless. I know that's not the main point, but...like, D inability to communicate passion or focus or even really joy is a major problem. 1

This is the anti-impeachment argument I have been hearing from others close to Congress. It’s what House leaders think. And it is Very Wrong. @casten.house.gov: “Impeachment… doesn’t accomplish anything unless it is followed by a vote to convict in the Senate.” No, no, no. This is status quo…

TLDR our representatives are currently acting like teenagers thinking this drama will pass by while they lay low like cowards. Sean Not Casten Votes

career politicians weren't made for unprecedented times. This is like watching a guy who wrote for the original BATTLESTAR GALACTICA trying to make the same stories work for Ron Moore's BSG. YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE SHOW YOU'RE WORKING ON RIGHT NOW.

Because a multitude of folks keep explaining, let's talk about why Democrats continue to be overwhelmingly unpopular with the very people who put them in office. Short conversation. It's cuz of kick the can, "maybe we'll get a majority again one day," shoulder shrugging Dems like this guy.

This guy bangs on for quite a while, talking about his vacation, some procedural stuff, and in the end never quite explains why the Democrats folded. My impression is he just didn't think it was worth the effort. But if you need electrolytes, the comments are fairly salty

Find yourself somebody who loves you as much as establishment Democrats love coming up with long-winded answers to justify why doing nothing is actually the right approach to dealing with Trump.

I would politely suggest that if you, as someone who swore an oath to uphold the constitution, do not make an effort to remove a president who brazenly and creatively assaults that constitution on a daily basis, then the business of government might not be for you.

Everything about this is wrong These clowns need primaries

"For the child born this summer in Texas, whose parents receive no documents, whose name never appears in any system, and who grows up asking why she can’t go on field trips, apply for scholarships, or open a bank account, the consequences are not legal theory. They are her life."

Never forget that one of Joe Biden's first actions in office was to channel public anger at the Supreme Court into a toothless commission that was designed from the start to stall for months until the anger dissipated so that nothing needed to be done

Duke appears to have lost NIH grants because they used the prefix "trans" in reference to disease transmission, transgenic genetic material, translational studies, or signal transduction www.dukechronicle.com/article/2025...

The official position of the Roberts Court is that Republican presidents are allowed to ignore parts of the Constitution they don't like, and that it would be extremely inappropriate for federal judges to do anything about it ballsandstrikes.org/scotus/trump...

The US government is carrying out terrorist attacks at people's homes.

just listened to Kirsten Gillibrand imply that Zohran wants to murder all Jews and destroy Israel. like an order of magnitude more racist than anything George W. Bush ever said about Muslims

What do you call a court that says parents have a constitutional right to prevent their kids from seeing storybooks with gay people at school, but no right to provide their children with access to gender-affirming health care?

Make no mistake, the SCOTUS decision about birthright citizenship IS ALSO ABOUT *birthright citizenship.* The Court is using nationwide injunctions as the tail, wagging the dog, to take us back to an Antebellum view of citizenship. That way led to war once. My latest in @thenation.com
