I am looking for someone who: - can compile linux from scratch - knows what linear programming is to possibly collaborate with. If this describes you, send me a message

Undergraduate research opportunities are incredibly valuable, both for the students and for the progress of the work. And having undergraduate research experience is a massive help for grad school admission. REU cancellations harm students’ preparedness & career prospects, and slow research progress

This sounds amazing! Let’s keep providing federal funding to scientists doing basic science and basic research so that we can keep making awesome discoveries!

So it seems like Emory's updated firewall is not blocking github but IS blocking codespaces, does anyone else have this issue and/or know what's happening?

Before and after.

I'm at a SLAC or at least SLAC modeled school, and a lot of STEM/premed students pass through my classes and are my advisees. I beg them to please take some classes that will help them understand their fellow humans and society we live in.

In the convo with my division chair about the road to tenure she (biologist) was shocked that a referee could have had a paper since October and would not have reviewed it by now. What are some other norms in Math that are abnormal in other areas? Authorship ordering is the big one obviously.

Please help my mug did a topology

tbh I think if the internet hadn't been taken over by large monopolies and remained open source, I think they would've been right. I think they were right to be optimistic. It's just a shame the internet was invented at the peak of neoliberalism

the rise of the fascist nerds was anticipated by Ellen Ullman's 1995 essay "Out of Time: Reflections on the Programming Life."

Went to see a movie with the kids yesterday and came away with 2 thoughts. 1) I love my kids a lot and spending time with them is more important than what that time is spent actually doing. 2) I think for quite a while now, all the intelligent creative writers have gone into tv.

My friend @mathyadriana.bsky.social lost her job last week, and I want you to know the story: buttondown.com/yarntheory/a...

🚨🚨🚨BREAKING: A federal judge has blocked President Trump's executive order that sought to end government support for programs promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. LET’S FUCKING GO!!!! apnews.com/article/dei-...

#MathSky the AMS survey is a good opportunity to point out the good things other societies are doing and ask for the same for math

AMS just released a survey that asks "What [...] will impact the field of mathematics and the mathematical sciences in the next 3-5 years?" I would encourage folks to use the fields provided and 'other' textbox to highlight the political the attacks on higher ed and funding. Check your inbox! 🧮

I’m about to start class you can’t do this.

So a substantial number of students this semester have come to me asking “what even is math research?”. Some interested in getting involved, some just curious. It’s like I have no response to this, but I was wondering if anyone had a resource that could explain this to a college freshman.
