Sir Chito was also the first person who came to mind. He was my mentor and ninong. He once encouraged me to consider a career in HR law, but I pursued a different path. He was the one who reminded me about being constant to my advocacy.

Thanks for your work in the Philippines! I worked in two USAID projects on climate change mitigation and GHG inventory from 2012-2016. Our work then helped govt agencies prepare for the climate negotiations and GHG emissions reporting to UNFCCC. Our past work would be futile if the shutdown happens.

I’ve admired Ressa’s work since 2009 when I met her at the ANC 2010 Presidential Forum at Ateneo de Manila University.

Her courage continues to inspire me, and I dream of collaborating with her to strengthen the bridge between science and media through Open Science, STEM community engagement, and sci-comm - powerful tool to counter misinformation.

Journalism and the scientific community share a similar battle today: the fight against misinformation. Just as journalists stand up against fake news, scientists work to uphold truth and evidence in the face of misinformation.

Maria Ressa’s story touches me profoundly as an aspiring scientist of color, an early-career researcher from the Global South, and a woman in STEM. Her resilience inspires me to find my place in both the world and my profession.

Six pages in, I was already moved to tears. Her vivid recollections of childhood resonate deeply, reminding me of my journey. Like her, I sought refuge in books to understand a world where I sometimes felt like a “misfit.”

Balancing life’s demands and a busy schedule while finishing my Ph.D. thesis, I’ve been reading her book bit by bit. It’s not just any autobiography—it’s one of those rare stories that grips you from the first page.
