Players in 85th percentile or better in batting, baserunning AND fielding run value, 2024: Bobby Witt Jr. Elly De La Cruz Francisco Lindor Jackson Chourio Jarren Duran h/t the wizard @jasonbernard.bsky.social

Whitaker and Trammell going in at the same time was always the way it should have happened. They both belong on their own merits, but even more so as a duo. The voters definitelty screwed it up.

I really wish this site would increase the baseball news and discussion, so I could permanently leave the state media site.

The Tigers apparently made a solid offer to Bregman. It gives me hope that they won't be shy when the right players are available. As for hitters not liking Detroit, the flip side is they were able to sign Flaherty probably because Detroit is is a good place for pitchers for multiple reasons.

I really wanted the Tigers get to Bregman. They are in a winnable division and he could have made a significant difference while they still have Skubal. I knew it was a long shot though especially once they started talking about short-term deals with opt outs. Comerica is not the place for that.

Brebbia gets a good number of strikeouts, but is an extreme flyball pitcher who gives up a bunch of home runs. Maybe Comerica will help him. I'm not sure he is better than their top 8 relievers, but they need a lot depth and he's another decent arm.

‪Seeing Tony Cloninger on the top of Baseball-Reference reminded me of one of the greatest box scores in MLB history: www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SF...

Great move by the Tigers. If he has a good year, he'll almost surely will opt out, but they need help now. Pitchers are fragile, so I don't mind taking it one year at a time with them.

For Maths fans, 2025 is a square. 45² = 45 x 45 = 2025 Also, 9² x 5² = 2025 40² + 20² + 5² = 2025 My favourite? 1³+2³+3³+4³+5³+6³+7³+8³+9³ = 2025 #Mathematics #teaching #education

December 28, 1998 - The Tigers traded Luis Gonzalez to the Diamondbacks for Karim Garcia. Oh Randy Smith! Gonzalez became a slugger for Arizona including his shocking 57 homer season in 2001. Garcia was replacement level.

The Tigers have signed Gleyber Torres according to Heyman, Petzold. 27 yrs old, bats RH, average hitter overall who crushes LHP, middle infielder, but not a good fielder. Has never played 1B/3B, so it will be interesting to see what the plan is.

In 2005, Rickey Henderson played for the San Diego Surf Dawgs. 16 stolen bases. caught stealing: twice. He was 46.

RIP Rickey Henderson. He was one of the most exciting and charismatic players in my lifetime. He may have been cocky, but he backed up every ounce of it with his play on the field. Just 65 years old. Who would have guessed that such a physical specimen would go so early. You never know.

December 20, 1933 - Tigers traded John Stone to the Washington Senators for Goose Goslin. Goslin later got a walk off hit to win the 1935 World Series, the Tigers first world championship. www.google.com/search?q=goo...

We've traditionally voted 1.5% of baseball into the Hall of Fame. I looked at each player on the ballot compared to their peers (players born 5 years before & after). Here are the ones in the top 1.5%. (Caveat: I used an IP & PA min of 50 & compared RP to RP). Just step one. Loaded ballot imho.

If I had a Hall of Fame ballot: In: Suzuki Rodriguez Beltran Utley Ramirez Sabathia Pettitte

Zach McKinstry makes the top 20 in Baserunning value at Savant. baseballsavant.mlb.com/leaderboard/...

December 12, 1933 - The Tigers traded Johnny Pasek and $100,000 to the Athletics for Mickey Cochrane. $100,000 was worth a lot more in those days, but Cochrane played and managed the Tigers to their first world championship. www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/co...

RIP Rocky Colavito. I am too young to remember him as a player, but he was part of a famous Tigers trade. After he won the AL home run title in 1959 (42 HRS), he was traded by Cleveland to Detroit for AL batting champion Harvey Kuenn (.353 BA). www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/co...

Tigers DFA Baddoo. He was exciting in his first year with the Tigers, but never recaptured it. He's off the 40-man, but could eventually end up in Toledo.

Alex Cobb wil no doubt be the 2nd best Cobb in Tigers history. He is 37 years old and missed most of 2024 with hip and shoulder injuries. He is usually pretty good when healthy though and it's only one year...Can't complain abut a one year deal. We can complain later if this is their big move.

I would have liked to see Tommy John and Luis Tiant make the HoF instead of Parker.

Dave Parker also has been elected into the Hall of Fame. He was a Hall of Fame talent at his peak, but I don't think he had enough great years. I don't believe he belongs.

Dick Allen has finally been elected into the Hall of Fame. He deserves it just based on his hitting. You mostly just hear about him being a trouble maker but he was one of the best hitters in MLB history. His 156 lifetime OPS+ is 18th on the all-time list. Hank Aaron was 155.

Ha Seong Kim is interesting. He would be a great fit for the Tigers except for the injury. Too many yrs is risky. A one year deal doesn't seem worth it since he may miss a lot of time next year. Maybe 3 years with some mutual options in there? Don't really know what to expect.

Adames goes to the Giants. He is 28, so this deal brings him to age 35. That's not too bad, but given how much he strikes out, I have a feeling he won't age well.

December 6, 1975 - Tigers traded Terry Humphrey, Mark Lemongello, Gene Pentz and Leon Roberts to Astros for Jim Crawford, Milt May and Dave Roberts. 7 player deal with the Astros? Looks like a Randy Smith trade, but it was actually Bill Campbell.

Tigers Dec 7 1979 - Traded Ron Leflore to Expos for Dan Schatzeder. 1984 - Traded Howard Johnson to Mets for Walt Terrell. Hated both trades at the time. Leflore was a favorite of mine. Didn't do much after the trade though. Anderson gave up on Johnson too soon. www.baseball-reference.com

BREAKING: Right-hander Luis Severino and the A’s are in agreement on a three-year, $67 million contract, sources tell ESPN. It is the largest guarantee in the history of the A’s franchise. And even with the qualifying offer attached, Severino got well over market expectations.

December 5, 1987: Tigers traded Dan Petry to Angels for Gary Pettis. Pettis was one of the fastest Tigers ever, excelled defensively and was 2+ WAR the next two seasons. Petry was washed up at that point.

So, Skubal is a union leader now...He is going to be a tough signing in case we didn'y know already.

Long time Tigers fans remember the day John Wockenfuss was traded, but few remember the acquisition of this legendary Tiger. On December 3, 1973, the Tigers traded Lawrence Elliott to the Cardinals for Wockenfuss. www.baseball-reference.com/players/w/wo...

Golden At Bat Rule? Why does Rob Manfred hate baseball?

On December 2, 2013, the Tigers traded Doug Fister to the Nationals for Ian Krol, Steve Lombardozzi and Robbie Ray. www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/fi...

I hear Red Sox fans whining that Pedroia is not getting enough attention from HoF voters. Pedroia was very good, but not a Hall of Famer. He can wait in line behind Lou Whitaker.

Nov 25, 2002 Tigers traded Randall Simon to Pirates for Adrian Burnside and PTBNL (Roberto Novoa). Many fans were upset that the Tigers traded "their best hitter" but Simon predictably never hit .300 again and never had much value in the first place. www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/si...

As someone who thinks there are too many teams in pro sports playoffs, the 12 team CFP seems right. That should get every deserving team in without making the regular season meaninigless. The challenge is picking the right teams from the absurd conference alignment. But the number feels right.

On November 23, 1998, The Tigers purchased Masao Kida from Orix. www.baseball-reference.com/players/k/ki...

I don't have much to say about Bailey Horn except that I've learned to trust Harris/Hinch/Fetter when it comes to no name relievers.

Stolen base success rate just keeps going up up up! Here it is for each of the last 100 seasons. 2023 was the first time it ever cracked 80%, and 2024 saw just a small dip to 79%, still second-highest ever. And remember that total number of stolen bases is also quite high these days!
