Nice slide on antiviral activity of different #TxID ppx/tx options from @kottonnelson.bsky.social presented by @jobadd.bsky.social at @wintercourseid.bsky.social

good day to repost this meme. #Tintin

Heartbreaking - but 💯worth reading 👇

tamiflu in hospitalised patients does not have the greatest efficacy but there is clear evidence of its use in post exposure profylaxis. It is important to bear that nuance in mind when discussing this. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39181596/ Can be important in zoonotic exposures

New study in @cidjournal.bsky.social from France looking at molds (no yeast/dimorphics) found in blood cultures. n=80 isolates from 2012-2022 2/3rds were Fusarium, 10% Lomentospora, 5% Trichoderma, 5% Mucorales, 5% Aspergillus 70% Hematologic malignancies academic.oup.com/cid/advance-...

In fairness it’s probably about as effective as Tamiflu

It's that time of year again. Here are my top 10 ID papers of 2024 1. My opinion 2. Practice changing, paradigm-shifting or dogma challenging 3. Not COVID 4. Alphabetical order by first author 5. CoI for 4 and 5 (I am an author) Summary slide here, details in thread #IDSky #Top10IDpapers

“The suboptimal performance of QIAreach QFT, particularly in young children, suggests that it cannot currently be recommended for wider use and that the urgent need for an accessible test of Mtb infection remains unmet”

Infectious diseases is not only about the latest trials and big cohort studies. So, here is a list of my favourite pieces that you might missed from The Lancet Infectious Diseases in 2024 that reflect on the field at large, in no specific order. #IDSky

There's a really interesting new paper out in Science for people who care about immunity to flu (which should be everyone because flu is a VERY big problem): www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... Here's my thread explaining this work🧵

King 👑 Staph aureus #IDsky #Clinmicro

Ancient DNA evidence supports the idea that T. Pallidum was endemic in the Americas, and came to Europe with Columbus, bottlenecked then spread outwards with European expansions and human trafficking as the syphilis we see today www.nature.com/articles/s41...

And people wonder why peds ID docs need to take such detailed medical histories 👀 #pedsky #medsky

Are superspreaders always social butterflies? 🦋🦠 Our new study on temporal social contacts showed most people are highly connected only for brief periods. Crucially, this challenges the idea that respi outbreaks naturally subside once highly connected people becomes immune. doi.org/10.1098/rsif...

Exciting to see the discovery of relativity common variants (in this case 2% minor allele frq in southern 🇨🇳) of primary immunodeficiencies. Kids with rare diseases are just the tip of the iceberg 👇🏻

Fascinating to see mutations in type I IFN receptor can differentially affect the activity of IFNa and IFNb. The susceptibility of this genotype to viral infections displays the relative importance of these type I IFN cytokines to host defence. V cool #immunosky #IDSky @jexpmed.bsky.social

Happy to share this commentary in Pediatrics on rotavirus vaccination in the NICU. In a study at CHoP (1st ref) there were only a few instances of transmission of attenuated vaccine strain virus, with no clinical impact for infants. We should no longer delay until discharge - vaccinate in the NICU!

Led by Chih-Ming Tsai + Irshad Hasham, a fascinating new JCI paper from the George Liu Lab at UCSD Pediatrics shows that in mice who have previous Staphylococcus aureus (SA) exposure, B cells secrete abundant IL-10 when challenged with the SA antigens for a second time (in a vaccine) Thread🧵 1 of 2

❗Safety signal in Moderna's RSV vaccine against infants. Great summary of the complex situation by @cohenjon.bsky.social @science.org That is extremely unfortunate. But important to communicate: both maternal vaccination and long-lasting antibodies are still safe ✅ www.science.org/content/arti...

One thing I like about this article: The title says it all. No ambiguity, no clickbaiting. Just: „No.“

2 vs 4 weeks for uncomplicated CAP in 🦮 1) More RCT evidence that Shorter is Better! 2) Lots of room for further improvement for our veterinarian colleagues and friends. 5d for 👶🏼 and 14d for 🐶? I don’t think we are that different #IDsky

Goodbye SARS-CoV-2, hello 'Betacoronavirus pandemicum'? @cofford.bsky.social reports on the controversial renaming of thousands of viruses. www.science.org/content/arti...
