Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) in Europe: new maps published www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/news-even...

Out with vaccines In with bleach?? WTAF!? www.wired.com/story/chlori...

This is a scary article by Carl Zimmer about the how scientists have found a second species of the fungus that causes white nose syndrome in bats. A potentially devastating development 🧪🦇

To express it in a consciously neutral way: Most (if not all) 🇪🇺 countries stopped vaccinating healthy children against SARS-CoV-2 BUT all 🇪🇺 countries recommend these vaccines for pregnant women! Quite incomprehensible from an international perspective. I feel sorry for our colleagues in the US.

Azithromycin can no longer be used for acne, stomach ulcers, or asthma prevention per EMA’s new recommendation. A key move against #antimicrobialresistance. Details 👉 www.ema.europa.eu/en/news/chan...

Disastrous, but unfortunately not surprising given the attitude of the current US leadership towards mRNA vaccines…

Words matter. It’s time to retire the term oral “step-down.” It implies inferiority of the oral route—and doesn’t align with stewardship principles. Terms like IV to oral switch or oral transition better promote optimal antimicrobial stewardship. What terms do you use—and why? #idsky

“children vaccinated before 8.5 months of age exhibited a markedly faster antibody decay and lost their protective neutralizing antibody levels over 6 years.” So, in times of outbreaks, when infants get an early💉dose to get protection ASAP, they’ll likely still need their 2 scheduled doses later

This is such an important shift. For many years the catholic church withheld support for HPV vaccination which prevents cervical cancer. 119,000 women die from this cancer in Africa every year. This full throated support of the HPV vaxx by the church will help uptake. nation.africa/kenya/health...

It's been a long journey...but I finally got my board certification for Microbiology, Virology and Infection Epidemiology! What a fun ride - thanks to all my great mentors at @healthsciences.mcgill.ca 🇨🇦 & @lmumuenchen.bsky.social 🇩🇪!

Second case of Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis in a few weeks. Hard to bear…

New Canadian #flu paper @stephaniedavey.bsky.social "It is notable that over 1/4 of deaths occurred in children without a medical condition deemed high risk for #influenza complications, highlighting importance of preventative measures for all children." #vaccines #vaccineswork #publichealth 🧪

She could be the next US Surgeon General? “The future of medicine will be about light. I don’t exactly know how.” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Are we ever going to get RCTs to test whether metagenomics improves clinical outcomes, or will it remain a whole load of 'evaluations' that are really just clinical services? What would a trial look like? Tricky given the technology is advancing quickly #IDSky #MicroSky @drmichaelmarks.bsky.social

Which kids are at risk of severe influenza? Our work on pediatric influenza associated mortality was just published - it was an honor to contribute. 👇 www.jpeds.com/article/S002... Not surprisingly, we conclude "Vaccination efforts should be enhanced to reduce influenza mortality."

Just did a consult on a toddler who developed a terrible hemolytic uraemic syndrome after drinking raw milk. It’s real, don’t do it

New hope for LYME DISEASE, right under our eyes? Unbiased screen surprisingly shows PIPERACILLIN can wipe out 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘥𝘰𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘳𝘪 in mice at tiny doses — 100 times lower than doxycycline — while leaving gut bacteria intact Jutras Lab Northwestern Sci Transl Med www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

👶🏼 Many #vaccines are not effective in newborns. So how do we protect them from infectious disease? 🤰🏽 By vaccination in #pregnancy! Here we review… 💉 Established campaigns vs whooping cough, flu, COVID 💡 New approaches to RSV, GBS 🌈 Future challenges, opportunities #ReproSky #ImmunoSky #IDSky

Some good news to brighten your day. 😎 Only caveat: this progress cannot be taken for granted, see vaccine hesitancy etc.

I first heard about the WHI study in med school. The finding that hormone therapy did not prevent heart disease in women after menopause was a leading example of evidence–based medicine. 20 years later… 😞 https://www.science.org/content/article/nih-cancels-its-first-and-largest-study-centered-women

24 h of crowd power ➡️ live table of every placebo-controlled vaccine RCT - 27 trials logged so far (>2 M participants) - Control-type tag = saline vs active comparator Contribute / explore 👇 bit.ly/3EuYzqI cc @statnews.com @kffhealthnews.org

Vacuum-assisted wound dressings - another expensive product that does not meet its expectations in a properly conducted RCT. 🙏🏻 to everyone involved in this work

Great news! 👇

The WHO priority list for bacterial pathogens is out. Based on factors like burden of infections, AMR etc. This is supposed to guide and highlight areas where research is urgently needed. www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

#ESCMIDGlobal new antifungals The Antifungal Pipeline: Fosmanogepix, Ibrexafungerp, Olorofim, Opelconazole, and Rezafungin pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34626339/

It was really special to watch the SNAP and CLOCEBA results live, accompanied by the in-depth comment and scrutiny they deserve. Thankful #ESCMIDGlobal virtual platform is excellent! Long live cefazolin and let’s hope the blaZ-A gene gets added to a blood culture rapid molecular ID panel 🤩 #IDSky

#ESCMIDGlobal starts soon 🤓 There's a new latebreaker session created to give 2-3 'big' trials their due: 'Trial Run', Sat 16:15 2 #SNAP trials + CloCeBa trial will be discussed in real detail Moderators @vancefowler.bsky.social +Julia Bielicki. @gurujosh.bsky.social @steventong.bsky.social #IDSky

The amount of green on this level of evidence guiding antifungal treatment duration demonstrates nicely the research knowledge gap in this field! #IDSky #ClinMicro #AMR @drneilstone.bsky.social

Nice slide on antiviral activity of different #TxID ppx/tx options from @kottonnelson.bsky.social presented by @jobadd.bsky.social at @wintercourseid.bsky.social

good day to repost this meme. #Tintin

Heartbreaking - but 💯worth reading 👇

tamiflu in hospitalised patients does not have the greatest efficacy but there is clear evidence of its use in post exposure profylaxis. It is important to bear that nuance in mind when discussing this. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39181596/ Can be important in zoonotic exposures

New study in @cidjournal.bsky.social from France looking at molds (no yeast/dimorphics) found in blood cultures. n=80 isolates from 2012-2022 2/3rds were Fusarium, 10% Lomentospora, 5% Trichoderma, 5% Mucorales, 5% Aspergillus 70% Hematologic malignancies academic.oup.com/cid/advance-...

In fairness it’s probably about as effective as Tamiflu
