“I can do more things, I can help, I can be part of the game somehow.” Sean Manaea’s “childhood hero,” Johan Santana, visits Mets camp: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“When he threw that fastball, I could see it on his face,” Juan Soto said. “He was feeling himself.” The introduction continues: buff.ly/4gW5EgW

Mets lineup vs. Astros today, their Grapefruit League opener: SS Francisco Lindor RF Juan Soto 1B Pete Alonso C Francisco Alvarez 2B Jeff McNeil DH Luis Torrens 3B Brett Baty CF Jose Azocar LF Rafael Ortega -- RHP Clay Holmes

Johan Santana is in Mets camp today as a guest instructor.

Brett Baty has been taking ground balls at shortstop, per Carlos Mendoza, who didn’t rule out trying Baty there during exhibition games later in camp. “He’s got the arm. It comes down to, can he get to the ball? Range and all that,” Mendoza said. For now, focus with Baty is second and third base.

Tyrone Taylor found a mystery loaf of bread in his locker today. It looked delicious, but he had no idea where it came from. Turns out, Ryne Stanek's wife, Jessica, likes to bake, so Ryne gives out bread to guys. Pete Alonso got one. They embraced. "I love you," Alonso said.

Juan Soto will make his Mets spring training debut Saturday, when they open their exhibition schedule by hosting the Astros. Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso also will play, Carlos Mendoza said.

Juan Soto bought Brett Baty and Chevy Tahoe as a thank you for giving up No. 22. Cost: $92,000. Soto said he did some reporting and found out that was Baty’s dream car.

Highlight from the Mets’ workout: In live BP, Jose Siri pulled — cracked, loudly — a pitch from Sean Manaea. Big yell, bat flip. Ball bounced off the leftfield wall. Oops. The other players ragged on him for it.

Happy to! Thanks for reading!

The Mets’ morning team meeting today: an introduction to “Skyline,” their proprietary, in-house program that allows players to access analytics, video and other information.

A finally healthy Matt Allan and the Mets face a fascinating question: At which minor-league level should he pitch? "I don’t care where I start," he said. "It’s not going to be where I finish." Lots more from Allan in his first interview in three years: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“I needed to go through that. I needed my character to be sculpted into the guy I am now.” Matt Allan, the Mets’ forgotten pitching prospect, is healthy and on the brink of pitching in games for the first time in more than five yes: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Among the ways Steve Cohen badly wants the Mets to be better in 2025: fans showing up. “I didn’t like it. It really bothered me.” Story: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“I’d like to get below the Cohen Tax,” Steve Cohen said. Lots more: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“It’s kind of like a bridge thing just to get to the next contract.” Pete Alonso on his first free-agency experience, returning to the Mets, the franchise homer record and more: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

The latest on Frankie Montas’ significant injury and what it means for the Mets’ rotation: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Drew Smith excited to return to Mets after Christmas 'understanding': www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Drew Smith said that on Christmas Eve, he & Mets came to “a pretty good understanding that I’d probably be back.” The deal became official last week. He’s very happy to be in the Mets’ clubhouse this morning. He left door open to pitch in 2025 in a “best-case” rehab scenario.

~~Juan Soto stuff!~~ I especially loved the collection of characters who got special hugs and hellos from Soto on Day 1 because they were familiar faces: assistant pitching coach Desi Druschel, outfielder Jose Azocar, catcher Jakson Reetz. More: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“And when he stepped in the batting cages with all the boys who were there, heads turned around. OK, here he is.” Here he is. Sights and sounds from Juan Soto, Day 1: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Please enjoy this evidence of Juan Soto’s presence at Mets camp

“It’s a conversation that I’ll have with him. It’ll be an ongoing conversation.” “MLB does a fantastic job with putting days off on the calendar.” Story on Francisco Lindor, Carlos Mendoza and taking a day off: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Most striking observation from the Mets’ workout today: As Kodai Senga topped out at 96 mph in live BP, Jeremy Hefner motioned to him as if to say woah there, take it easy. “I’d rather be doing that than poking and prodding.” And other notes: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Christian Scott, in the dog days of Tommy John surgery rehab, looks lowkey jacked. He said he put on 10 pounds of muscle over the offseason and is up to 218 pounds now (and wants to get to 220) He would lose 5-6 pounds *during* a start last year, so extra strength is key.

So, about Edwin Diaz and the WBC next year: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“I have to earn everything.” Wondering (and inquiring) whether there is a version of 2025 in which Jett Williams emerges as a major-league regular: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“By and large, this is the team we’re going forward with.” Just in time for spring training, the Mets’ offseason is over. buff.ly/4b56E1e

Big day in Port St. Lucie: Sunrise is before 7 a.m. for the first time (officially 6:59 a.m.).

David Stearns on a completed offseason, Iglesias, payroll present and future, Alonso: buff.ly/4b56E1e

A loooooot of Mets roster-related news and notes from Carlos Mendoza today: second base, new positions for Acuna and Madrigal, Baty?, rotation, Butto/Megill, Marte, more. www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

“Man, those five innings were electric.” Kodai Senga, declared healthy, will “ramp up slowly”: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Kodai Senga said his offseason was half-rehab, half-normal and he has felt totally healthy and normal since early January.

Kodai Senga through an interpreter on all the Japanese players who have signed with the Dodgers: “Of course I would love to have some more on the Mets. But the weather, the climate is nice there. That definitely played a part.” Then he added: “We need to build a roof.”

“I lost my mind for a little bit. … If I have bad moments this year, it’s not going to affect me like last year.” If the Mets are going to have “the best lineup in baseball,” as Francisco Alvarez contended, he’ll be a reason why: www.newsday.com/sports/baseb...

Here is the first version of the Mets’ spring training roster (with the Pete Alonso signing not official yet):

Hello from Port St. Lucie, Day 1 of 43! Let’s have some fun
