Yes, it's sad but true - we Canadians must shift into a wartime mentality as Trump has commenced an economic war on Canada. Trump is a world dictator wannbe and his annexation fixation must be treated for what it is - invasion of another nation via economic force.

Mexico, Canada, and China are the top trade partners for 42 states. Canada is the top import partner for 23 U.S. states. As expected, the northern U.S. is dominated by Canada, which is the largest supplier of grain, livestock, meat, and poultry to the U.S.

Trump has repeatedly claimed the United States is 'subsidizing' Canada 'to the tune of $100B.' Where does that number come from? And is Canada really getting a free ride from the U.S.? The math, the money and the politics to uncover how much if any of what Trump says is actually true.⬇️

Far from being a scorecard of economic strength or weakness, the bilateral trade balance between two countries means little from an economic standpoint. ⬇️

it must be getting ripped off. In this view, America’s relatively slim trade deficit with Canada is a “massive subsidy” that must be eliminated. Tariffs are just the tool for the job. Economists think about trade deficits very differently. ⬇️

The U.S. actually ran a sizable surplus with Canada if oil and gas are excluded. The U.S. posted a $94 billion deficit with Canada last year in oil and gas. ⬇️

In response, Canadians have taken to acts of patriotism, small and large: one pilot flew his small plane in the shape of a maple leaf; sports fans have booed US teams; hats insisting “Canada is not for sale” have gone viral; ⬇️
