When I sat down with Sean Baker in October for the @latimes.com, the awards race was just starting. Winning four Oscars was the furthest thing from his mind. But, still, we talked about all that. Read the piece this morning and these quotes really jumped out at me. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

THE 97TH ACADEMY AWARDS: The MOONLIGHT and Will Smith years were more infamous, but tonight was the most purely pleasurable and graceful Oscars in too long. Once Conan O'Brien locked into his sharp, self-effacing persona, there was no stopping him. And the NO OTHER LAND speech was an all-timer.

A Salute to the Movies That Got Overlooked During Oscar Season - by Tim Grierson www.rogerebert.com/features/a-s...

ME: Watched it again tonight, this time on my laptop with my earbuds in so I could crank up the volume. So angry and so sad and so right for right now.

The guy who asked Zelensky if he owned a suit, Brian Glenn, is a reporter for the pro-Trump media network Real America’s Voice and also Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's boyfriend. He got one of the rare Oval Office interviewer spots only after the White House blocked the Associated Press.

That press conference was what happens when an actual leader with courage & honor sits down in a room with…whatever those things occupying the Oval Office are. He is by far their moral superior & on some unconscious level they know that—hence the defensive eruption of condescension & rage.

Congrats to one half of the best movie pod out there @timgrierson.bsky.social for getting into the Merriam-Webster word of the day example spot

This thread from Mark is so good and so right -- all the way down to his point about how the Academy behaves just like the Democrats in the stupidest of ways.

Almost exactly four years ago, my book THIS IS HOW YOU MAKE A MOVIE came out. Since then, it's been translated into (among other languages) French, Spanish and Russian. I'm very happy to say the Chinese edition is now available.

Gene Hackman: Great American Actor, or the GREATEST American Actor? 'French Connection' to 'Royal Tenenbaums,' classics to deep cuts (big up 'Prime Cut'!) — his 20 best movies. (Thanks to @sepinwall.bsky.social & @timgrierson.bsky.social for their help here) www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv...

Pitched in on this @rollingstone.com piece highlighting Gene Hackman's finest performances, of which there were many.

An obituary I never wanted to write: For @rollingstone.com, some thoughts on the passing of Gene Hackman.

LAST BREATH is a straightforward but smart and surprisingly touching survival story.

I'm generally happy with this year's Oscar nominees. But for @ebertvoices.bsky.social, I paid tribute to 10 great films from last year that won't be mentioned at all during the Sunday telecast. www.rogerebert.com/features/a-s...

For @rollingstone.com, I updated my rankings of every Best Actor winner this century. My continuing takeaway: The Academy has tended to do better in its picks for the men than the women.

"Maybe I left off some movies you really adored. That only strengthens my argument: We don’t need the Oscars to remind us that so many gems don’t fit their narrow definition of “best.”" @timgrierson.bsky.social salutes ten films that weren't nominated at the Academy Awards this year

MY BOOK IS ON SALE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! pre-order link and book tour dates here: maryaegates.com/cinemaherway/ A little bit about the book's journey: oldfilmsflicker.substack.com/p/cinema-her...

@timgrierson.bsky.social on the annual best thing about this godforsaken Oscar season. www.latimes.com/entertainmen...

I really like that, one week before the Oscars, I'm really not sure what's gonna win a few of the major categories.

OLD FRIENDS: Despite discarding narrative in favor of banger after banger, the show flows and builds, treating each song as a classic worth rediscovering. Would it be as moving if Stephen Sondheim were still alive? Probably not, but it also probably wouldn't be as moving if we still had a country.

Very happy to see Rose Byrne singled out by the Berlin jury for her terrific performance in IF I HAD LEGS I'D KICK YOU. (Movie's fantastic as well.)

At long last, Charles Burnett's THE ANNIHILATION OF FISH is getting a theatrical release. I reviewed this quiet beauty for the @latimes.com.

“a tale of two troubled souls who find each other, the movie has become an even stronger tribute to the people (not to mention the art) we so easily push aside.” a gorgeous review of “annihilation of fish” (1999) in the @latimes.com. the film opens this evening in los angeles at the los feliz 3!

For his follow-up to the superb LONGLEGS, Osgood Perkins aims for your funny bone as well as your gag reflex. Here's my review of THE MONKEY.

This was a treat: I had a long talk with stand-up legend George Wallace about Johnny Carson, his best friend Jerry Seinfeld, his new sitcom CLEAN SLATE, and why he's so damn happy even when the world is so damn terrible.

One of the advantages to staying on Facebook is seeing some of the messaging being shared by conservative folks I grew up around. I find it telling that they're falling back on one of their old favorites: "Hey, now, why can't everyone be civil?"

Eventually, every movie star gets his or her own DIE HARD. For Daisy Ridley, that's CLEANER.

2/18/83: Scorsese's The King of Comedy, w/Robert De Niro, Jerry Lewis, Sandra Bernhard Way ahead of its time More @timgrierson.bsky.social: www.rollingstone.com/feature/how-... @scotttobias.bsky.social: www.theguardian.com/film/2023/fe... @mattsinger.bsky.social: thedissolve.com/features/mov...

"To put it mildly, things aren't looking great right now. But defeat is a self-fulfilling prophecy." Desperately needed this John Oliver segment on Trump's abhorrent first month back in office.

On February 6th at the Biltmore, I had the honor of presenting @lafilmcritics.bsky.social's award for Best Cinematography to Jomo Fray for his terrific work on NICKEL BOYS. Here were my remarks from the stage. (Photos by Shiloh Strong.)

For the @latimes.com, this lapsed Catholic talked to Ralph Fiennes and Edward Berger about faith -- both in religion and in art -- and their film CONCLAVE. I was especially interested in asking Fiennes how one "plays" spirituality. He didn't think he had an answer for that, but in a way he did.

Are your favorite Bong Joon Ho movies OKJA and SNOWPIERCER? Then you are going to love the hell out of MICKEY 17. Here's my review:
