When I talked to him, he was embarrassed about how sappy, etc. it was -- not that he had once wanted to make something like DIE HARD. (He still talks fondly about movies like that and ROBOCOP, which are the films that got him interested in being a filmmaker in the first place.)

When I spoke to the Gardena folks for that piece, they mentioned that, in the past, they've done tributes to Baker around his birthday, which is in late February. They were hoping to do it again in 2025, but they guessed he might be busy because of the Oscars. They were right.

So glad to have Gints Zilbalodis up there talking about the importance of independent animation filmmakers -- a nice symmetry to Sean Baker saying something similar with his wins.

That's a great point -- and, of course, a great Best Picture win. But on the whole, I thought this show was smoother and just better produced.

DAHOMEY was on the short list for both Documentary and International, so it at least had a decent shot at making the final cut.

I talked about this tonight on the podcast (which was recorded before the SAG awards.) Bottom Line: I think that voters could decide THE SUBSTANCE is "more" than "just" a horror movie, like they did with GET OUT. open.spotify.com/episode/6fPC...

As my review probably indicates, they aren't my favorite flavor of Bong, but I did like the film.
