RIP Richard Nelson.

Hello, Bluesky! We are the Brookings Institution, one of the world’s most trusted think tanks. We’re excited to share our research here and to engage with the community. As we get started, we’d love to hear from you. Reply to let us know which policy areas most interest you!

A🧵: In my time in administration, I’ve implored my colleagues to understand that STEM fields were particularly vulnerable to changes in federal research funding policy. Nearly every time, I was met with a cavalier attitude that political headwinds wouldn’t allow drastic changes. 1/N

We are seeing some impact on reproducibility efforts with the transition to the new US administration. For now, I suggest that you make backups of any data that required you to actively interact with the Federal government, as there may be a delay in response times.... #openscience

Dick Nelson, pioneer in the economics of technical change, has died at 94. His remarkable book with Sid Winter (1982) An Evolutionary Theory of Economic Change spawned many literatures. His edited the first "Rate and Direction" volume and wrote a history-based investigation of 1/2

Hello #EconSky, a simple question but one where I have not yet found the answer. What should I read to get a quantitative empirical understanding of the contemporary relationship, both size and timing, between scientific discovery and productivity growth?

Congratulations to Bronwyn H. Hall of @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social who was recognized as a 2024 Distinguished Fellow by Lawrence F. Katz at the #ASSA2025 Annual Meeting. #econsky aeaweb.org/about-aea/ho...

Just had our data access rescinded for a projected using federal microdata to study and reduce disparate impact in housing markets.

Rams staff wearing LAFD t-shirts. Makes you feel better about football, if not about LA fires.

Firefighters from Mexico just arrived at LAX. They'll be joining 14,000+ personnel already battling the #PalisadesFire. California is immensely grateful to our neighbors' support in the fight against the wildfires in Los Angeles.

Graduate students with interests in innovation, permitting or immigration policy who would like to work on fiscal and economic impacts -- apply now! Applications close on 1/16.

Interesting article and thread. Another story is that the policy people have been losing influence to the politics people for generations. Economists are just one kind of policy person. The Clinton administration was an odd outlier to this long term trend, mostly because of the Pres. himself.

Interesting discussion of economics journal practices -- e.g. QJE reviewers were too nice* -- in this data colada post. * I was never too nice when I was on the QJE editorial board. datacolada.org/122

The 2025 Economic Report of the President is now available. There's a chapter on K12 education! www.whitehouse.gov/cea/written-...

I was incredibly honored to be awarded the CSWEP Carolyn Shaw Bell Award. When I accepted the award, I talked about the importance of mentoring. The lessons I pass on are kind of obvious. But they are important, so I am going to share them yet again. (A🧵)

Very thankful for the hard work of the firefighters under terrible conditions, and for the firefighters coming in now from out of state.
