A better America is possible. Imagine going to the doctor and not being worried about the cost. Imagine having three days off per week and being able to pay all your bills. Imagine being able to go to college and graduate without debt. It’s possible.

I regret to inform everyone that today was not the bottom. We aren’t even close to the bottom, yet.

This is great.

The Eagles should go visit Justin Trudeau to just rub more salt in the wound

like it or not, we need these people. we tried to beat trump without them and we failed. if we want to save some semblance of democracy, the coalition is going to have to be bigger than just the people who've been right about everything the entire time.

He nails it.

You do not fight political fights with the same policy as your opponent, especially if you paint your opponent’s policy as dangerous. Democrats should not get more conservative, the party should get dark money out and advocate for Medicare for All.

Both informative and terrifying. I suggest bookmarking site. www.project2025.observer

I can’t remember where I read this, but it’s important: Why is it that when people think about traveling to the past, they worry about doing something small that will drastically change the present, but no one in the present thinks that doing something small today can drastically change the future?

I've thought about this a lot over the last nearly 10 years.

“We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was ‘legal.’” - Martin Luther King Jr.

There's a Crisis of Masculinity in this country and the only way to solve it is to let me act like a cross between a baby and a movie villain

Clip and save this for when he spends the majority of his time at his golf courses again, I guess

If our government has money for war, ethnic cleansing, and genocide, they have money for reparations for the descendants of chattel slavery. These struggles are linked. Our elected officials are choosing to spend money on bombs instead of our communities.

people say “just stop doomscrolling” like we’re not literally live-streaming the series finale of american democracy

If our country survives this crisis, I hope the experience will show Americans 2 important things: 1. That government is a necessary good--not the evil that Ronald Reagan warned us about. Air traffic control & food safety inspections are great, actually. 2. We have to enforce the laws on rich ppl.

If you empower a dictator to crush your opponents they’ll be no one left to keep him from crushing you.

This is a great idea. Do you know anyone in Congress you can talk to?

RONALD REAGAN (1988): We should be aware of the demagogues who are ready to declare a trade war against our friends, weakening our economy, our national security, and the entire free world—all while cynically waving the American flag.

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

Feels like we are living in the first third of a Star Wars opening crawl

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

You know, if a small percentage of the US Electorate were just fine with a woman President, I'd be sitting here on a Saturday morning, enjoying my coffee, and not Doom Scrolling wondering what on earth is going on

Bernice King says it well. We needed compassion, empathy, humility, and truth this week from our president. We got lies, blame, racism, and mean-spirited, petty attacks on our trans and differently-abled siblings.

"It needs to be said clearly: There are those who systematically work by all means to drive away migrants, and this, when done knowingly and deliberately, is a grave sin." - Pope Francis

After seeing enough people talk about vulnerable groups “fucking around and finding out” under the onslaught of the Trump administration, I decided I had to write a response. My latest: www.jphilll.com/p/i-dont-wan....

If they really think empathy is sinful, I truly don’t want to know what they think is saintly

if we staff ICE with Uvalde police officers, they'll never enter schools

Once they normalize breaking the rules to go after people who are not citizens of this country, their next phase will be to go after people who are "not the right kind of citizens". By then it will be too late to stop them. Don't let them normalize any of it.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Perhaps someone should start a site where mediocre, straight, white men can talk about how DEIA hurt them, it can be called "My Struggle".

People of good will and conscience are eager to do something, and we do need to do something. However, immediate knee-jerk actions aren't going to amount to much. We are 4 days in, and I'd strongly suggest taking a few days to regain your equilibrium and have that good cry or whatever.

One of the driving principles of the second Trump administration is affirmative action for mediocre white men
