Climate change has never been clearer, and this is in part due to brilliant work by US climate scientists. Yet the Trump administration is trying to outlaw even the word 'climate'. The "leader of the free-world" is undermining that title in every possible way.

This is how you support your scientific community, @ametsoc.org. Excellent work! 🧪🌊 Note to other professional societies. Speak out, yes. But, words are not enough in these times. Help your members, and that includes those in underrepresented groups.

Absolutely shocking and very worrying from NOAA www.newscientist.com/article/2469...

The TSU for IPCC Working Group 3 is based in and funded by US. Sounds like this is being cut?

Prof Ben Garrod caught up with Steve Backshall on campus this weekend as part of the Norwich Science Festival. He answered our burning questions on everything from Strictly, sharks and Olympic sports. There's lots more to explore this week @theforumnorwich.bsky.social #NorwichScienceFestival

Finally got around to making a radar graphic for #Helene. One for the record books

I’ve consulted with multiple DoD groups on climate change - their goals were predicting how geopolitics would change and the vulnerability of their built infrastructure. How does the changing Arctic affect submarine detectability? Search and rescue? Coastal flooding of naval bases?

There is a lot going on right now! So much in fact that our news team at @science.org is now running a Trump tracker to keep track of it all. *sigh* 🧪 www.science.org/content/arti...

So looking forward to reading this paper on fire deficits and how #treerings helped crack the case. I also love this #infographic

Trump has now asked Elon Musk to examine US defence spending. Elon Musk’s companies have multi billion dollar contracts with the Department of Defense and are seeking more. The BBC’s Today Programme just reported the first part, without mentioning the second. Unacceptable

Colleagues at Bangor Uni are advertising a new PhD project on the restoration of UK temperate rainforests. Fieldwork in beautiful locations including running field experiments + working with external stakeholders. Looks brilliant! Full details here: tinyurl.com/rainforestphd

Misinformation can be hard to spot, and even more difficult to report and correct. This how-to guide from @envdefensefund.bsky.social shares step-by-step instructions for identifying misinformation and reporting it on social media platforms.

Great to see our climate paper featured in this month’s issue of Weather! 😊🌎 @rmets.org @peterthorne.bsky.social @simonj1967.bsky.social @maynoothuni.bsky.social @universityofgalway.bsky.social

Does global warming lead to more winder cold extremes? Probably not, but this question made me realize we don't have a good fundamental theory for mid-latitude temperature distributions and how they will change. So I'm unreasonably giddy for this paper (my student Keiko's first) to come out: 1/

Wow. Any mid-career climate science PR folk seeing this - what a life-changing opportunity to make a difference: www.ipcc.ch/2025/02/06/h...

I've been encountering over the past few days the claim that the planet is warming twice as fast as predicted. This is entirely untruthful and unhelpful. The planet is warming AS fast as predicted, which is cause enough for dramatic action. The truth is bad enough!

Did you know we now have an hourly dataset called GHCNh? Did you know we have data in parquet format? Did you know I have a repo for folks to get the data if they need to for... reasons? github.com/jjrennie/ghc... Click on the binder button on the bottom to launch a notebook!

Weather forecasting has gotten much better over time. We underestimate how much weather forecasts have improved how societies run, produce food reliably, and protect themselves from disaster. My article from last year on this topic: ourworldindata.org/weather-fore...

Increased crevassing across accelerating Greenland Ice Sheet margins "These processes can in turn speed up ice flow and lead to the formation of more and deeper crevasses - a domino effect that could drive the loss of ice from Greenland at a faster pace." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

IPCC AR6 scenarios from European organizations had a higher share of solar & wind, higher electrification, less reliance on nuclear & CCS. European modellers contributed >70% of the scenarios, so the IPCC AR6 scenario results has a significant European fingerprint. rdcu.be/d8pkw

Did climate change contribute to the LA wildfires? Yes "human-induced warming from burning fossil fuels made the peak January Fire Weather Index more intense, with an estimated 6% increase in intensity, and 35% more probable" Barnes et al (2025) www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...

The fantastic podcast "Countering Climate Skepticism" has reached its 17th episode. Co-presented by my former PhD student Mark, it is well worth a listen. It will help you identify and counter the dizzying array of denial arguments peddled by clueless folk. ccspod.podbean.com/e/ep17-summa...

Draft chapter outline for IPCC AR7 WGI is now public - *subject to approval* at the plenary, end of Feb What's new? Compared to AR6: -More concise -greater range of modeling approaches -chapters span Earth System domains -considers diverse physical scenarios /thread/ apps.ipcc.ch/eventmanager...

🌳🌳🌳 We have a new paper in @pnas.org showing climate warming leads to growth decline in beech because it drives trees to reproduce more frequently. Climate change can cause growth decline even when drought isn’t increasing by shifting where trees allocate resources doi.org/10.1073/pnas.2423181122

Claims questioning why unvaccinated people are still alive today have been circulating widely on Facebook. This claim use a common tactic called “just asking questions” to cast doubt on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines without providing evidence. We reviewed the claim and found it misleading

Using our attributions methods (adapted from the study below), we calculate that climate change enhanced wildfire intensity over the LA area by 6% between January 7th-11th. This is assuming a 10% difference in wind speed.

4 year senior postdoc opportunity working on event attribution with me on a new @epaireland.bsky.social project in collaboration with @frediotto.bsky.social and the good folks at @wwattribution.bsky.social ideally to start in March: universityvacancies.com/maynooth-uni...

It says a lot about the current funding crisis affecting UK universities when Wales' biggest university proposes to close its Nursing course to save money, at a time when the NHS is desperate for more nurses.

Very sad news: Linda Mearns passed away last night. A huge loss to her many friends and colleagues, and a tremendous loss to science. She research and insights improved the lives of millions. Her intelligence, humor, and obsession with uncertainty will always be remembered.
