Getting along like Unicode in an ASCII file. In a love/hate (but mostly love) relationship with Alabama, Mobile in particular. I like SQL. And, of course, EVERYTHING I post here is on my own behalf, speaking only for myself, etc. unless explicitly stated

And I am an ally. If you are too, let the world know.

I went to see a really good band tonight. Great musicians. Right up until they played Dixie for their closing number. "This one's for two of my great-great grandfathers." I walked out.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer - this is FANTASTIC news. It is of course early days, and there’s a long way to go, but it is wonderful to hear that there’s some promise. It’s such a bleak diagnosis because it’s so often found when it’s far along.

I have so many smart, accomplished, wonderful people following me here. Thank you all for a share of your precious attention!

I had, as it turns out, a voluminous quantity of words to say about the National Endowment for the Arts demanding fealty to Trump in their new grant guidelines (with side tangents into Robert Mapplethorpe, the Eight of Swords in tarot, compliance and resistance, and why budgets are moral documents)

Umberto Eco put together a now-famous list of 14 attributes of fascistic states. I'm going to discuss each of them in hopes this helps ppl understand that fascism is not just a buzzword. We're going to go through these by theme, so strap in. 🧵

Dungeons -and- Dragons? In this economy?

Africatown Welcome Center is going to be happening. It's taken a really long time to get to this point. Here's the story: www.al.com/news/2025/02...

I’m honestly surprised that my capacity to be astonished remains undiminished. There’s just SO MUCH, and yet.

I've worked really hard to throttle back my political engagement online over the past few years. I think I'm doing a pretty good job staying informed but not getting overwhelmed these days, and that's worth a lot. There's a lot that hits closer to home than normal lately, and it's hard.

Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar is officially my favorite soda now. Cherry Coke Zero had a looooong run at the top, but it has been supplanted. Remember, friends - take a moment to enjoy SOMETHING every so often in these times.

When my mother told me “anything is possible,” I didn’t realize she was making an existential threat

Astronaut, author, professional football player, and STEM educator Leland Melvin was born OTD in 1964. Here he is in the greatest photo ever produced by the US space program. Image: NASA

A bit late, but we got our flu shots and COVID boosters today. On the way out of the pharmacy I got a Blackberry Dr. Pepper Zero Sugar, and it is very much the way I've seen folks describe it - tastes more than a little like Ny-Quil's berry flavor (or whatever store-brand equivalent you have).

In a sentence never before uttered by humans, I am delighted to share that an alligator stole my conservation instructor’s hat by jauntily walking into the water while wearing it 🐊

Rod Serling's ability to deliver some of the most gorgeously unhinged lyrical monologues with not just a straight face but real pathos and gravitas remains unparalleled.

Why don't you want to see this ad? □ Sensitive topic □ Not relevant to my interests ✅️ I don't want every second of my life to be monetized by blood sucking parasites

You’d think that Musk and his cronies, such self-styled brilliant technical people, would have heard of the notion of setting an obviously impossible value as a flag that there’s something off with that record. I’m just a dumbass nobody but I do that all the time in my data work.

The Human ambassador bowed, hands behind their back. The Xturi envoy extended a big, soft paw. "I was told Humans greet with touch?" "Are Xturi comfortable being touched?" The Xturi's large, round eyes opened wide. Their thick, silky fur rippled as they laughed. "We relish touch!" "Excellent!"

I'm not a Christian, and haven't been one for a long time, but i've always found these words and what they're supposed to mean to be the fundamental core of Christianity, even over and above the Sermon on the Mount, and I truly don't understand people who miss this.

Mid-refilling is NOT the time to suddenly get REALLY interested in my fountain pen's filling mechanism and poke at it. Catastrophe was narrowly averted.

'Update mirrors now that perms are fixed': Commit message or salon to-do list entry?

BEAVIS: What cruel irony it is, Butthead, that the most physically vulnerable body parts are also those which give the most pleasure when touched by another person. BUTTHEAD: Our bodies reward us for trusting, Beavis; as though co-operation is inherent in our very biology. BOTH: hehehe-heheh

I missed this when it went around earlier, and while Azure Data Studio was occasionally frustrating I still largely lived in it for both work and personal projects. I'm going to miss it. The MSSQL extension for VS Code is a lot more useful than it was before, so the change shouldn't be TOO bad.

It appears that today's in Tim's Language Quirks, I'm saying, 'I see,' an awful lot. (Yes, it took an effort of will to phrase it that way.)
