“Don’t feed the trolls” also extends to bad opinion pieces in papers of record. They run them bc people react to them the most. If we stop linking to bad columns and instead post thinkers we find valuable (& generate convo around it), incentives change. It’s not easy and takes constant practice!

We’re in for weeks of this on end. One of Musk’s tween haxx0rz stumbles into a complicated system they don’t understand, thinks they’ve discovered something earthshattering the veteran dunces never noticed, relays to Musk who also doesn’t understand, and broadcasts it to millions of followers.

We are in the middle of the most profound crisis of American government since the civil war and our idiotic political media can barely see it. Control of the US has been handed to a totally unelected oligarch whose politics are defined by close association with neo-Nazis and conspiracy theorists

SCOOP: One day after Trump's new Chinese tariffs went into effect, Americans say they are being blindsided by notifications from DHL and UPS saying that they owe between $20 to $50 (or more) in import duties www.wired.com/story/tariff...

EXCLUSIVE: The Bureau of the Fiscal Service is a sleepy part of the Treasury Department. It’s also where, sources say, a 25-year-old engineer tied to Elon Musk has admin privileges over the code that controls Social Security payments, tax returns, and more.

I do not recall a 24 hour or one week news cycle with more disturbing news about the state of the presidency and the US government in it than those of today and the past seven days. January 6 was nothing compared to this. But make no mistake, this too is the gov't being torn apart by a mob of thugs.

These are not “settlements” they are “bribes” and should be described accurately. The reporting even explains that CBS executives believe this payment will help avert Trump blocking their merger. Thats a bribe. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/30/b...

Serious question: can the president just spend all his time in office suing people and then use the litigation as a "legal" way of accepting bribes via "settlements"?

maybe instead of everyone trying to pretend that the president is normal and isn’t talking about conquering nato allies, everyone should try reacting as if the president is talking about conquering nato allies

Wish the Dems would understand this. The public opinion research is pretty clear that mass opinion follows the cues of their leaders. It's why every R believes there was mass fraud in 2020.

Please stop moving Discord to a new directory every time it updates. It makes Windows forget I want to have it pinned on the system tray. @discord.com

It would be terrible if someone flooded the snitch email with a million AI slop fake reports every day. I hope no one does that. It would be wrong.

it’s becoming increasingly clear the goal of the far right is to defund and buy up every source of reliable information until there is no more objective reality to counter them

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance. Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.

We have a presidential administration that views itself as being at war with half of the country and sees its mission as subjugation. Every act and policy we are seeing fits with that lens.

In talking about the information environment, this is the free speech crisis that's been hiding in plain sight and now it's boiling over.

the very first thing he did was pardon hundreds of people who directly tried to overthrow the government and people are out there talking about “bipartisanship” do your FUCKING jobs

everyone who shit their pants about the thought of trump standing trial or serving time, take note: THIS is what actual failing states look like. functional states punish crimes and coups, even when they’re done by elites. it’s sclerotic, broken states that allow them to return to power, unpunished

Even if the facts and law aren’t on their side, someone with the means to do so can drag you through years of litigation as punishment for speaking truth to power. It’s both emotionally and financially draining, which makes it a highly successful tactic at silencing the truth.

The era of the independent DOJ is over, aided and abetted by the media that covered Biden's strenuous efforts to work within it as more scandalous than Trump's promises to destroy it.

personally i think one should just ignore anti-anti-trump academics who have done nothing but obscure the reality of the situation facing the nation in favor of grinding axes against people they don’t like

Yup. Biden said they won't enforce it, that they're leaving it to Trump regardless of what the law says. This is the Chinese government disseminating pro-Trump propaganda on U.S. soil.

American teens are flocking to a new video app

Siri, show me a headline I'll be seeing for the rest of my life

I love @bsky.app and really enjoy the community here. My one gripe is that I wish there were better tools (or any tools at all really) for filtering notifications. It makes it hard for me to engage with people bc my notifications are just a firehose with no way to filter them. @support.bsky.team

Universal programs + progressive taxation is so much more efficient and equitable than means testing. www.vox.com/policy/39322...

These posts exist from every phase of Trump's rise but if you express similar sentiments about Trump's authoritarian nature, intentions and actions now (absent the murderous ideation here typical of tough guy conservative posts) you're a hysterical shitlib bsky.app/profile/sara...

"He genuinely believed the election was stolen" — yes, that is precisely the problem.

holy hell this is sad stuff from CNN

And people need to stop saying Trump has a mandate because he won every swing state. If a candidate somehow got 50.1% in all 50 states, they would win the electoral college unanimously even though the election was basically a tie. In terms of a mandate, the state win count is a meaningless metric.

Sometimes the combination of arrogance and ignorance is breathtaking. Yes, US health care has high admin costs; that's because it relies so much on private insurers. Govt-run health insurance has much lower overhead

History repeats. In late February 1921, 2 weeks before taking office as POTUS, Warren Harding writes a letter to the richest man in America, William Randolph Hearst, thanking him for helping him win the presidency with favorable coverage in major newspapers he owned & begging for his advice.

The Costco Guys must speak out about the tariffs. It is time for moral leadership.

Social media is in desperate need of innovation. Meta is only letting you have a slice of control over what you see because Bluesky is here building for you.

Censorship will begin - in the name of "anti-censorship"

Wow. This video is truly eye-opening. Take a couple minutes to watch this. A mind-boggling visual representation of wealth inequality in America. This sh*t ain’t workin’, folks. #TaxBillionaires #UnionsForAll
