I do wonder to what degree that the people supporting technology moral panics (politicians, scholars, professional organizations) really are just outright lying about the science, or just are completely clueless. The distortions are amazing to behold sometimes.

One of the BC NDP's many lies is that covid is a seasonal virus with the same seasonality as the flu. It lets them take time off in the summer. Sure it kills a few people, but haven't you heard: we all die eventually, or as John Horgan put it in the fall of 2020 power grab: "Death is part of life."

To be perfectly clear: "if we shut up whenever the government kicks us in the 'nads, they'll be sure to respect is more" is not a winning political strategy.

“…instead of using AI technology to run the chatbot and create the app, the company hired 700 engineers in India to pose as Natasha in conversations with clients, and then to do the actual coding of the app.”

As you read the official communiqué from the meeting it becomes clear that this is where Carney is going to dig in for the real fight — and where Smith is least prepared to defend herself, @maxfawcett.bsky.social writes.

Ten or fifteen years ago the general belief was that metallurgical coal would be with us for as long as we wanted to make steel in industrial quantities. Today, the writing is on the wall. Technological progress does not solve all problems, but it's a lot more powerful than is generally believed.

My Canadian university, Queen's, is offering TWENTY 4-year funded PhDs (40k CAD/yr) for a student of ANY citizenship who has been accepted at a top 100 US university but have had offer rescinded OR are reconsidering offer due to US policy. Details found here👇 www.queensu.ca/grad-postdoc...

I see that the federal Liberals are taking a page out of the BC NDP's playbook and asking for a blank cheque on powers of government over-reach, albeit not *quite* so extreme. Bill 7's worst provisions were walked back, thankfully, thanks to the Greens. Hopefully the Liberals will fail similarly.

The weirdest thing about the school-reopening discourse is how no one wants to specify when, precisely, schools should have reopened. This article treats it as a scandal that schools were still closed in September 2020 but we were heading into a bigger wave than March!

Horizon removing mask mandates just as a the new Covid variant is arriving is a huge mistake @susanholtnb.bsky.social hospitals need to keep mask mandates on year round. Taking them off now is going to cause a spike in cases

'House, MD' reboot: House is replaced by a Waymo branded AI Diagnosis Bot that fouls up in hilariously fatal ways every episode

The fact that Canadian leaders continue to have "Let's build more pipelines" conversations while Saskatchewan and Manitoba are being decimated by wildfires is just wild to me

Garneau was Canada's first person in space, and later served as transportation minister and foreign affairs minister.

I will never cease to be amazed at the truth of the statement: "The right looks for converts, the left looks for traitors"

This is a very damning and worrying study by provincial scientists. It demands a response from Minister Schulz. If we already have unsafe levels of selenium in Crowsnest Lake from legacy coal mines why are we looking at additional mines? @cpawssab.bsky.social #abpoli

NEW ANALYSIS: UK's solar power surges 42% to a new record, after the sunniest spring on record * For the first time, solar was >10% of UK generation in consecutive months (April/May 2025) * In 2025, solar has already avoided gas imports that would've cost £600m www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uks...

South Florida meteorologist @johnmoralestv.bsky.social told his viewers live on air that he can no longer accurately predict hurricane season, due to federal government cuts.

You cannot make a deal with the US. The US is utterly unreliable, and you cannot make deals with an unreliable partner.

Followup: "So you'd better make yourself right with my particular god."

He’s not just a taco. He’s a soft taco.

Half a century later, the roof of the Montreal Olympic Stadium is still the best pictorial representation of "Budget Overrun".

In 2023, even before Trump was elected, global trade in goods declined 2% while global trade in services increased 9%. Galaxy-brained Canadian governments: DOUBLE-DOWN ON GOODS RIGHT THIS MINUTE, IT IS THE ONLY WAY.

And you cannot deal with these thought processes via argument, facts, Bayesian updating, reasonable persuasion, or similar. Ergo, alternatives to those things must be employed. Anything else is flagrantly irrational, completely unhinged, divorced from reality, incredibly stupid, and sure to lose.

"decarbonized Canadian oil and gas pipelines" So, pipelines full of hydrogen gas and nothing?

"Energy superpower" means: 1) build all the pipelines 2) ship all the oil and coal 3) poison the planet ... 5) profit! Or it might mean "invest in battery tech, solar, wind, and modern nuclear", but where's the profit in that? :-/

What the last few days have demonstrated is that European security would be far more enhanced by integrating a Ukraine that is willing to fight for European freedom, then relying on a USA that is clearly not interested in doing so.

In response, Ukraine should blow up the other half of the Russian air force.

Basing a public health strategy on an ideology that is rooted in nostalgia, the naturalistic fallacy, and the false binary that divides a population into 'healthy' or 'unhealthy' while an unprecedented outbreak of H5N1 is ongoing is a clear threat to global health security.

Makary's claim of "no data" illustrates the classic EBM failure mode. Too many don't understand science outside their "gold standard" kiddie pool, everything inside it is slow and retrospective, and without mechanistic understanding they can't generalize - everything is just memorized special cases.

Just the foot of the learning curve, too. Who imagined this? I didn't, and I've been thinking about these things for decades. You didn't either. You know what else we can't imagine? What liberal insurgents will be doing with these things next year, next decade. Coming soon to an autocracy near you!
