Any #meteorology or #cloud peeps out there? Are these Kelvin-Helmholtz type clouds? Spotted (and photographed) by my wife in Bethesda, MD, early this afternoon. She described them as “lasagne” clouds!

Happy #SuperbOwl Sunday to all who celebrate! Here is a lovely Barred Owl in a forest clearing in Discovery Park near Seattle, WA. The owls are cheering on their fellow raptors for the win!

Cruelty is a feature and not a bug. Ceasing PEPFAR is a disaster for Africa and elsewhere and may come back to bite us.

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Snow in the DMV. Most snow since 2016, ~4” at 9 am with at least that much more expected over the rest of the day and into the night.

Does anyone have a contact for Ann ? Would love to discuss with her the possibility of partnering with her to publish her cartoons exclusively on @bluesky

A Common Raven in a tree 100 yards from our house, being mobbed by American Crows. While we occasionally (once every couple years) see flyover Ravens, this is the first time we’ve seen one perched in a tree in suburban Bethesda! (Video courtesy of J. Redmond)

Happy new year

Retinal Regeneration for Christmas Eve #SciArt #retina

#Art #AdventCalendar Day 24: the last day of Advent! Today’s extra special bird is a Barred Owl sitting on a branch at eye level in a forest clearing. This is one of my favorites from the past year; Discovery Park, Seattle, WA. Happy Christmas to all who played along!

It might be time to share my genuinely terrifying memories of DaidĂ na Nollag. I spent formative years living on a small Irish island and on Christmas Eve he'd land at the east end of the island and be accompanied into the East Village by fiddler and accordion. 1/3

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 23: is a Snail Kite. Though very rare/endangered in S. Florida, it is quite common in Argentine marshes. It seemed that I saw more in 2 days than are in Florida! Note its bill, specialized for removing Pomatia snails from their shells; Entre RĂos Province, Argentina.

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 22: counting down… This is the Fork-tailed Flycatcher, sitting on a wire, a bird whose tail is twice as long as its body. It is common in open area where it hawks for insects; Entre Ríos Province, Argentina.

Modern doctors should prescribe more lengthy holidays to the south of France, and insurance should cover it

Retinal Vasculature Visualized And An Editorial On Science Funding I wrote this back in 2016, and it’s more accurate now than it was then as science funding has gotten even tighter. #SciArt #retina bryanwjones.com/2016/03/reti...

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 21: The South American Giant Wood Rail. For those who think of rails as small skulking birds more often heard than seen, here is a loud, in your face, super-sized one! Common in freshwater marshes; Entre RĂos Province, Argentina.

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 20: Today’s bird is the Alpine Chough. It is one of 2 Chough species in Europe and is restricted to the high mountains. These corvids are fearless aerobatic performers in the mountain air currents, diving and swooping; Les Diablerets Ski area, Vaux, Switzerland.

#ArtAdventCalendar #Birds Day 19: A pair of Guillemots (or, more prosaically, Common Murres) at their sea cliff nesting colony. This is another species of auk found in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; Great Saltee Island, Co. Wexford, Ireland.

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 18: Today is the magnificent TV bird, the Turkey Vulture, here seen warming up atop a roof for a winter’s day flight. Turkey Vultures are an essential part of the North and South American ecosystem; Elliott Island, Dorchester Co., Maryland.

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 17: Behind today’s door is the male American Wigeon. A pretty “dabbling” duck, it has a white crown on a silvery gray head with a green stripe through the eye. This is a common duck in many areas in winter; Choptank River, Cambridge, Maryland.

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 16: This is the male Canada Warbler, a tiny jewel of the Western Maryland mountain forests, another Neotropical warbler species. Here it is in a rhododendron thicket, some would say its “host plant”; Garrett Co., Maryland.

Sadly, it’s a good time to once again share this amazing infographic that we ran at @science.org more than 7 years ago 🧪 #IDsky www.science.org/content/arti...

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 15: A BIF, a sub-adult Northern Gannet flying over its natal colony. This bird will be old enough to breed next season. It already has the yellow head of the full adult plumage but is still blotchy across its wings and back; Great Saltee Island, Co. Wexford, Ireland.

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 14: A family of Sandhill Cranes. Adults on either side with Junior in the middle. The plumage of these birds is normally grayish but is often stained red with soil iron due to preening by their muddy bills; Oakland Co., MI.

#ArtAdventCalendar #birds Day 13: Today’s bird is from Africa and is a Grey-backed Fiscal Shrike. Being a shrike it is a predatory songbird given to impaling its prey (large insects, small rodents, small reptiles, etc.) on thorn bushes. It also has a nice song; near Kigali, Rwanda.

Just sayin’
