Ten years after the Indigenous-led protests at the Dakota Access Pipeline, representatives from Greenpeace International and two Greenpeace entities in the USA have arrived at court to fight a meritless lawsuit brought by US oil company Energy Transfer.

A nefarious new strategy in a fossil fuel led SLAP suit in rural North Dakota relating to Standing Rock: “In recent weeks, mysterious rightwing mailers have arrived at the homes of local residents that Greenpeace alleges could further taint the jury pool.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

"In this new world where the foreign policy of the most powerful country on Earth has been rapidly reorganised around the fragile ego of a sullen and resentful old man, you might as well launch missiles at America’s eastern seaboard as utter a few words of rebuke" www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

More Scrubbing for Obsequious Anticipatory Compliance (SOAC) from tech bros “Another page that previously said the foundation focused all its work through “a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens” removed that phrase.” www.theguardian.com/technology/2... #acronymoftheday

A tragic reminder that a lot of online scams are carried out by people who are enslaved: "At least 120,000 people across Myanmar and another 100,000 in Cambodia may be held in situations where they are forced to execute lucrative online scams www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Bernie Sanders: "They will use the enormous media operations they own to deflect attention away from the impact of their policies while they entertain us to death."

Board member of META asks a very good question.

“Several people who knew Coristine said they were confused as to how he ascended to such a consequential position and nervous as to how he’ll handle the enormous responsibility that comes with it, given that he could not handle it at Path Network.” newrepublic.com/post/191325/...

“There are thousands of examples of this throughout all 50 states – ICE press releases that have reached the first page of Google search results, making it seem like enforcement actions just happened, when in actuality they occurred months or years ago.“ www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

I am hereby renaming "eating leftovers" to hereafter be called: culinary scrapbooking

This past weekend, I visited one of these concentration camps at Manzanar (here in California) where Japanese Americans in from western US states were imprisoned en mass during WWII. Now is a good time to get to know this history to better resist those who are trying to repeat it.

I will never tell people not to politicize a tragedy, so long as what's being said is accurate. Regarding the DCA disaster, we do not have the facts yet, so we can't have a fact-based analysis at this time.

I just finished watching #ManOnTheInside. It’s officially my favorite detective show. Most satisfying solution / twist ever.

The debris flow in January 2018 in Montecito (which killed 23 people and injured 163) was caused by the combo of heavy rain on areas recently burned. Similarly tonight, in Malibu, there is little vegetation to slow the rain as barrels down and gathers momentum on the steep, destabilized slopes.

I'm not teaching my grad course 'Civil Resistance: How It Works' this semester. But here is an abridged version of the course schedule, readings, and films I used the last time I taught it (in 2022). Just in case it's useful. drive.google.com/file/d/14RRJ...

Take a minute today to appreciate all the water our world stores so beautifully in the sky.

Smoke from the Hughes fire reaches all the way to Ventura. Driving on the 101 today.. Surreal!

The #HughesFire started less around 10:30 am this morning by Castaic Lake near Santa Clarita in LA County. By 1 pm I was already seeing smoke and ash in the air here in Ventura, more than 50 miles away from the fire. Latest from the Ventura County star: www.vcstar.com/story/news/2...

Here we go again. Another round of very strong & locally damaging offshore winds is imminent across SoCal. Due to now record-dry vegetation, this will result in another "extremely critical" wildfire risk period, esp. across parts of LA & Ventura counties Mon-Tue. #CAwx #CAfire

The climate crisis is rocking in the insurance industry and the LA Fires are the latest shock. This article is wonky, but its an important dive into this problem that is only going to grow dramatically as the frequency and size of climate disasters escalate. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

An important reminder for those of us who hav enjoyed Neil Gaiman's work: "In our era, people have righteously debunked the myth of the perfect victim – but less so the myth of the perfect perpetrator. The perfect perpetrator is an evil stranger..." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Doctorow's concept of enshitification is important for all of us who have come to Bluesky from old, decaying socials. He argues Bluesky must deliver their promise of federated servers: it allows us to take our followers and leave if and when their server decays. doctorow.medium.com/https-plural...

Insurance companies are going to play a massive role in California’s future: “In the longer term, the state has been looking for fixes as its insurance market is overburdened by the devastation caused by climate crisis-fueled disasters.” #LAFires www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

A look at the investigation to find the source of the LA fires: “If there's high winds, the wind takes the fire away from the origin. And it leaves a big, black finger of burnt ground pointing backwards upwind. And if you follow that, you’ll get to the origin…” laist.com/news/climate...

🔥Watch Duty is a free fire tracking app that allows users to zoom in on their precise location to access real time updates on carefully vetted official evacuation orders, routes and other critical fire information. Now available in 22 states. #EoceneAdaptation www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...

From @wired.com: an interview with #WatchDuty app founder. Many of us have depended on them through the LA Fires: "We're doing like 30,000 requests a second at peak right now. We're doing more users in an hour than we've done in like a month. It's absolutely bonkers." www.wired.com/story/watch-...

I'm a believer in smart policy, but all the finger-pointing in the LA firestorm about hydrant flows and LAFD budgets seems like arguing about the adequacy of Hiroshima's 1945 building code standards. It's a way to evade the big questions.

A fact check on the LA Fire Department budget cut rumor: "..the city increased the fire department’s overall budget by approximately $53 million in the current fiscal year." It explains how budgeting details led to it looking like a $23 million reduction: www.dailynews.com/2025/01/09/f...

For LA fire victims, keep in mind: "US insurers made record profits of $87.6bn in 2023 from their property and casualty business... In 2024, they were on pace to shatter that record... making about $130bn in net income in those sectors in the first 3 quarters." www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

BREAKING NEWS: Palisades fire is now at 19,978+ acres, 0% contained. 5,300+ structures destroyed, officials say #PalisadesFire

"@hopenothate.org.uk said it expected to see 'a dramatic increase in toxic content' on Meta platforms, with the changes likely to make it easier for far-right groups to coordinate local activity of the kind that fuelled the August riots in England." www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

Learning about the doctrine of prior appropriation in law school is one of the most maddening things I've ever learned. Water rights are determined by who first owned the property centuries ago and does not take into account climate change, development, or modern usage practices. It's not rational.

I was honored to have the Ojai Valley News use my photo from this morning to illustrate their coverage of the fires in LA County and a smaller fire here in Ventura County, the Olivas fire, which seems to be under control. www.ojaivalleynews.com/news/county/...

Sun rising behind the Ventura pier this morning through tendrils of smoke from the #PalisadesFire burning right now #Malibu. For those of us who have been through wild fires, the bright red sun through thick smoke is unforgettable. It is equally beautiful and apolocalpytic. #californiafires

View from Ventura of smoke billowing out of #palisadesfire in the Santa Monica mountains and stretching far into the Pacific. #losangelesfires #californiafires

Three major fires burning in the mountains above Los Angeles: the #Eatonfire in Pasadena, the #Palisadesfire in Palisades and the #Hurstfire on the north edge of the San Fernando Valley. I highly recommend the Watch Duty app for tracking the extent of the fires and evacuation details. (1/2)

Apparently, Facebook now sees anti-trans and anti-immigrant content as "mainstream" and acceptable: "Zuckerberg said Meta would also 'get rid of a bunch of restrictions on topics like immigration and gender that are just out of touch with mainstream discourse'" www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

"The profile became unavailable on Friday immediately following widespread social media outrage and concerns about 'digital blackface as a service,' but Meta says it will continue to push AI generated content on all of its platforms." www.axios.com/2025/01/03/m...

Seems Siri was serving ads... "Two plaintiffs said their mentions of Air Jordan sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants triggered ads for those products. Another said he was served ads for a brand name surgical treatment after discussing it... with his doctor." www.theguardian.com/technology/2...

An important paradigm from @meredithmeredith.bsky.social to understand large language AI models like ChatGPT in light of surveillance capitalism: "There’s an inflection point in 2012 that I’m sure you’re familiar with: There’s this paper that got published, called the AlexNet Algorithm... (1/6)
