Very powerful and important op-ed. To provide context: The corporatization has been decades in the making.Since the advent of DRGs in the 80s, the shift from care to cost control accelerated, with PE,hospital consolidation, and EHR optimization all reinforcing a model where metrics displace meaning.

I have been frustrated by the narrative around #burnout in medicine, so I wrote about what I believe makes a better, more comprehensive framework of systems-based trauma. Put simply, health professionals are traumatized by the system, and are leaving in droves. www.medpagetoday.com/opinion/seco...

Spoiler alert: just take a wild guess where the AGs of Idaho, Missouri, and Kansas filed their federal law suit. Because it's not Idaho, Missouri, or Kansas.

A point that I make to anyone who will listen is that currently we do not have a system in the United States to uncover undocumented people the government does not already know about. It doesn’t exist. So, to carry out mass deportations, we would have to create one — and it would transform us.

The beating heart of the wellness industry flows with pseudoscience, and to say that it’s lucrative would be an understatement. My latest: thewalrus.ca/wellness-ind...

So I made a starter pack -- it's not perfect, but it's a bunch of accounts that make me think about things specifically about misinfo, rhetoric, and sensemaking. Still adding to it but feel free to share or suggest additions. go.bsky.app/FUJ42CG

You don’t have to ask <if> or <when> 🇺🇸 democracy will backslide. It already has. We’re just too ashamed to admit it & refuse to see how the things we tolerate are not tolerated in any actual full democracy anywhere else in the world. Today in life under competitive authoritarianism

We're under attack and have been, but no one wants to admit it because that would also admit that it's coming from within

Trump is the fascistic leader of a rightwing coalition that unites all shades of reaction and is entirely dominated by extremism. Should Trump emerge victorious from the election, America will not become a fascist dictatorship overnight. But the Trumpist Right will try.

This is one of my favorite town hall conversations. @tnicholsmd.bsky.social on what to expect in an emergency department. We operate in a frustrating system, but knowing the purview of emergency medicine helps. youtu.be/WtQEtZ43wOQ?...

yup, there’s a whole complex of governmental levers (legal and illegal) that can be pulled, plus a permissive DOJ and courts to let state/local actors pull their own levers, all supported by freelance threats and harassment and channels for regime-allied people to impose on their neighbors.

Every time I see an article about how liberals/leftists must avoid 'polarisation' I want to share this graph. Polarisation is actually a euphemism for the radicalism of the centre-right into a far-right.

Turns out that Bush Sr. was absolutely right when he derided trickle down as a scam. Reagan hollowed out the middle class and created a new class of American oligarchs, and people STILL won’t let go of this toxic idiocy. Tax the rich.

This woman is voting for the first time in her life at age 81 because her husband, who is now dead, wouldn’t let her. No, feminism has not “gone too far”

Oh cool we're at honor killings now

Well, that's pretty terrifying. Excerpt from a long read by NYT Mag on Musk, Thiel, and the other "Lost Boys of Silicon Valley" bankrolling Trump's campaign (to the tune of 10s of millions of $). www.nytimes.com/2024/10/18/m...

Lots of people dunking on this but I'm actually sort of optimistic. Demagogues do have a special sort of sway that most people can't capture. Just look at all of the people who have tried to copy him and just flamed out.

New: Do some political conversations on Twitter strike you as a little less than authentic? For the first time, researchers have uncovered a coordinated LLM network of nearly 700 fake accounts devoted to gumming up Twitter replies to advocate for specific GOP races: www.nbcnews.com/tech/interne...

Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing an astonishing thing: after he achieved critical acclaim and literary success, he thought deeply about what it means to be a writer, did research and on-the-ground reporting, and is speaking truth to power by emphasizing in interviews who doesn't have a voice in US media.

Hi new friends, welcome! I’m an emergency medicine and addiction medicine physician interested in health policy and advocacy. I post about harm reduction and the intersection between politics and health and healthcare, and my otherwise meandering thoughts of political despair.

In the last weeks before the election, Republicans have revived their case against mifepristone. They want to ban mailing the medication (essentially passing a back-door ban), revoke access for minors entirely & more. This is a BIG DEAL. jessica.substack.com/p/mifepristo...

It’s way more health-relevant that cash is contaminated with E. Coli and MRSA than it being contaminated with fentanyl. (Which is irrelevant unless you plan to stuff cash in your cheeks and suck on it like a disgusting little gremlin.)

This needs to be taken seriously, and addressed forcefully. There need to be significant repercussions for disinformation, and taking violent or potentially violent action based on such. And those repercussions need to be publicized so other people understand the consequences.
