I actually agree with the thesis that a stable democracy generally requires buy-in from conservative forces, as for whatever reason they don't seem to have a good record of actually disappearing. But I don't know what to do about that in a world where they are in fact no longer buying into democracy

State governments should cut off all state and local cooperation with the FBI, and they should do it immediately. No law requires it, the Constitution fully empowers you to not even return their calls. But there is no legitimate purpose now in treating them as an acceptable partner for anything.

I think it's weird that people are scrambling for a reason to explain why Republicans are acting so subserviently towards Trump when Republicans have acted subserviently towards Trump since he came down the escalator in front of people he paid to wave his signs in 2013. They're not scared.

The net budgetary effect of firing thousands from IRS is guaranteed to swamp any "cost savings" from DOGE. Orders of magnitude. Musk is out there "saving" millions. This is going to cost the US hundreds of billions of dollars.
