With everything going on right now, I find this headline and this passage in particular really pretty offensive. @theguardian.com @georgemonbiot.bsky.social

I guess Trump’s Special Envoy doesn’t agree with him that Zelensky is a corrupt, incompetent dictator. Pretty schizophrenic foreign policy.

Can we just seize the Russian assets already and give them to Ukraine? Good lord just do it

The Nazi salute taboo is broken. These folks are showing us who they are.

This & YouGov's poll showing Brits give Zelenskyy +48 & Trump a -51 approval shows dangers to the right in UK of listening to the v. online/US coded in their approach to Ukraine. Brits really support Ukraine & aren't polarised on it. 52% of Reform voters entirely blame Russia

'Elections'.

Another similarity between Badenoch & Corbyn is tendency to dismiss opponents rather than take them seriously as people who hold different views for good reasons. Corbyn saw opponents as less morally virtuous. Badenoch sees them as stupid. In both cases, they have a fig leaf for their own laziness

I don't see Trump demanding elections in Russia. ...ironically one year, almost to the day, after Alexei Navalny's murder.

I don't think Trump is being blackmailed or bribed by Russia. I think he genuinely believes that a richer, bigger country should be able to do whatever it wants to smaller neighbours, and that Ukraine's defiance of Russia spits in the face of some imagined gangster-capitalist proper world order.

Interestingly, the one civilisational threat to democracy she didn't mention are the ACTUAL TANKS rolling Westward.

◾️"Look at these photo&look at the people in Ukraine.No,Mrs. Weidel,we are not neutral,we are not standing aside. We are on the side of Ukraine, defending our political system," -Friedrich Merz, Chancellor candidate, in response to the leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany party,Alice Weidel

"I believe it is peace for our time" @deadder.bsky.social

Gift link to Keir Starmer's Telegraph article: very important piece, worth reading:

I'm sure everyone who thought a European army was a bad idea a few years ago are reevaluating in light of new evidence.

Important. Gosh. The PM: “These crucial days ahead will determine the future security of our continent. As I will say in Paris, peace comes through strength. But the reverse is also true. Weakness leads to war.” www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

Terrific piece about the challenge facing Europe and what we must now do in this weekend's @financialtimes.com:

As a journalist who covers extremism at the local level, I think it’s a mistake to view Trump’s Napoleonic statement as solely about presidential power. Consider if it’s interpreted as a wink and a nod for any extremist to act outside the law to “save” the country as they see fit

Still internalising the Vance Munich speech. A sitting Vice President goes to Europe, barely says a word about the despotic murderous regime which has invaded its neighbour, and instead lectures his allies about freedom of speech. It’d be funny if it weren’t so serious.

Good morning to this man, and this man only #bbcqt

Glad to hear the 'Leader of the free world' now agrees that NATO's adversaries get to decide who joins NATO, not NATO themselves

Pass it on, Donald Trump does not know or understand what VAT is

Labour should be using the need to increase defence spending as a off-ramp for their promises on tax, not letting their defence policy (like everything else) be constrained by their promises on tax.

OTD in 2022 "Examples of large-scale disinformation campaign by the Western media, hyping the claim that Russia is planning to invade Ukraine" were debunked by my parody in Sweden. And then we never invaded & all you imperialists were proved wrong. So you can believe us now about negotiating.

🚀 Russia attempted to launch an "Oreshnik" missile at Ukraine, but it likely exploded on Russian territory — Forbes. Media reports suggest the missile was aimed at Kyiv but failed to reach its target. www.forbes.com/sites/davida...

something that stands out for me at the almost-2.5-week mark is that Musk priorities are actually happening and Trump priorities are not.

As Trump proposes ethnic cleansing as a "solution" for Gaza, it is important to remember that Azerbaijan carried out a complete ethnic cleansing of 120,000 Karabakh Armenians just 17 months ago. The West let them get away with it. I do not mean this as whataboutism, but because historically, ethnic

Perhaps if he had not spent so much time playing video games so that he could be the #1 video game player he would know that the answer to this question is "All of them."

Even Netanyahu cannot believe what he is hearing

this is going to go very poorly

Imagine if America would go after Russia, China, and Iran the way they’re going after Canada, Denmark, and Panama.

It’s pretty amazing that these guys are going with “Covid, which wasn’t a big deal, is the worlds greatest bio weapon, that we shouldn’t have cancelled school for a semester for, but also China did almost destroy the world, but don’t forget it’s also just the flu”

It’s 2035, Russia reaches the German border having marched through Poland. Our only response “But 2024 Treasury brain told us Ukraine was a money pit”

Far-right pro-Russian politician and Romanian presidential candidate Călin Georgescu stated that Ukraine is a "fictional state" and that its division among neighboring countries is only a matter of time. youtu.be/kGlDTicvAlc?...

I see we're trying to normalise Sieg Heil-ing now?

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Felt very uncomfortable watching the BBC spend a significant chunk of their otherwise brilliant coverage of Auschwitz anniversary on the King's day. He is not the story. And putting him before an interview with a british survivor felt wrong.
