Five things to remember about war:

I'm on BBC World Service later discussing how we're not going to get people cycling more just by encouraging them. I've not heard the edit, but hopefully they've used lots of the footage of me slagging off Swansea's car-first infrastructure as we cycled through the city www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w...

Trump rages in incoherent ALL CAPS posts; Benji talks about his "personal sacrifice" in having to postpone a wedding while on a press-conference in front of a bombed hospital; Iran posts a video on the destruction of Israel that is an actual LEGO-movie. The world needs leaders; it gets toddlers.

"As landworkers, we understand where monoculture gets us, and we know the importance of diversity; in our seeds, in our crops, in the fields and on the farmlands and including those who work them. "

Copenhagen is expected to receive 30% more rainfall by the end of the century. The city is responding with a massive long-term adaptation plan.

Kings and their symbolism... It's as if the"Ancien Régime" never really gets to stay "Ancien".

Looking at it from, arguably, a very long distance across the Atlantic, I'd say: "you guys in the US are screwed". And I am baffled by how relatively easily it all unravels. None of us are safe from similar forces, wherever we may live our citizen-life.

So Kristi Noem goes on Fox and lies that Sen Padilla didn’t ID himself, even though the video is there for all to see. But get what she’s saying: Assaulting and handcuffing someone for trying to ask a question is OK in any case? This is a criminal regime.

We may disagree on many things, but we stand together on the fundamentals. We are relearning the meaning of “solidarity.” This is absolutely vital. https://robertreich.substack.com/p/solidarity

Folks, CBO estimate of the distributional effect of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is out: www.cbo.gov/system/files... It's grotesque

"loving-kindness, [...] when you interact with someone as a person worthy of care". That should simply be the global human agenda, period.

The Beach Boys' co-founder Brian Wilson has died at the age of 82, leaving behind a storied legacy as one of pop music's greatest songwriters and producers. Here are NPR's best interviews, concerts and appreciations of the late artist.

"They are not allowed to express partisan views while on duty, or to show disrespect for American elected officials. [...] It is part of their oath, their credo, and their identity as officers to remain apart from such displays." So I guess it is now even more obvious that it is already too late.

Levensbelangrijke bijdrage aan het debat rond mogelijke overheidsbesparingen. En het illustreert nog maar eens het Belgisch principe van de laatste decennia: "private lusten, publieke lasten".

"Obviously there’s something deeply wrong with a body politic that could put such people in power. I do have enough faith in America to believe that their reign will eventually end. In the meantime, however, they’re doing incredible damage. And I don’t expect to see a full recovery in my lifetime."

The military isn’t being employed to carry out an immigration policy. The immigration policy, and especially the way the administration is choosing to carry it out, is an excuse to call out the military.

NPR speaks with a British orthopedic surgeon who just returned from his fourth medical mission to Gaza. He says many people he operated on were civilians and were shot while trying to reach food aid.

Georgia’s governor promotes his Medicaid work requirement as a national model for reform. Yet the program has cost taxpayers more than $86M, three-quarters of which has gone to consultants, and enrolled only 3% of the quarter-million Georgians eligible. (Published Feb. 2025)

Last week, @rhodesben.bsky.social and I did a Munk Debates against Kevin Roberts and Kellyanne Conway on whether Trump is leading America into a new golden age. We won. This is from my closing statement. There’s nothing golden about a movement that bathes in gratuitous cruelty.

This kind of shift towards "Realpolitik" has a clear anti-humanist bias, and it will lead to a schism in, if not downright destruction of, the Democratic party. Citizens of a democracy should (and hopefully will) not accept one villainous administration replaced by another, more "light" version.

As LBJ said 60 years ago, freedom is not just opening the gates of opportunity. True freedom is ensuring everyone has the ability to walk through them.
