Forestry is a technical discipline that uses tools from molecular biology to aerial imaging. LiDAR is a tool to examine Earth's surface. It can open up the history of human use of forests. Here is an explanation from Howtown. What do you think of this video? Too technical, or about right?

We are having more good rain and moderate temperatures in the Bluegrass. The Eastern Deciduous Forest has had more rain than usual. Our ancient trees, like this ancient chinkapin oak, are certainly not complaining and are growing very well.

From Riley Black, here is an excellent story about carnivorous plants. We are used to thinking about animals eating plants. Plants that eat animals are rare but very interesting. When Seymour says "Look, you're a plant, an inanimate object" in Little Shop of Horrors, he is way off the mark.

Kepada semua temanku, Selamat Idul Adha!

When a young George Gershwin sought to study composition in Paris, Maurice Ravel declined, writing to Gershwin "Why become a second-rate Ravel when you're already a first-rate Gershwin?" I often think of that. Why would I want to be a second-rate Ravel when I could be a first-rate me.

Bright green food in Asia is made with pandan leaves, Pandanus amaryllifolius. It has an amazing story: Known originally from the Molucca islands of Indonesia, it is now extinct in the wild. It is a cultigen - a crop plant known only in cultivation. Thanks to @acidlich.bsky.social for the reminder.

When I walk by this house, the home of Thomas Hunt Morgan, I am grateful for his great contributions to modern biology, including establishment of the fruit fly as a model organism. The trump criminals are dismantling modern science, to the long-term harm of everyone. We have to reverse the damage.
