What would an anti-oligarchic, republican economy look like? UBI? Wealth tax? Workplace democracy? Strong trade unions? Investment democracy? I explore a radical republican economics in my new book, 'The Wealth of Freedom', which is now out online. academic.oup.com/book/60075

The wealth of those societies in which the capitalist mode of production prevails, presents itself as an immense accumulation of meal deals.

I wrote a review of @brunoleipold.com's brilliant book:

‘Twentieth-century fascism appears to have little in common with today’s leading far-right movements.’ @trillingual.bsky.social analyses the origins and discontents of the far-right populist groups gaining ground across the world: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

What’s the charge? Socialising an economy? A succulent capitalist economy?

Listening to the Penguin audiobook of Paradise Lost while I’m reading the text, and it’s really breaking the immersion that the narrator keeps saying ‘imp-ious’ rather than ‘im-pious’.

It’s not actually a profound moral failing if every person on the planet’s social media posts are not a dedicated 24-hour alternative news service.

Unfortunately, the cat that visits our house still treats me as one of the terrifying Gorgs that is sure to capture poor Fraggles like itself.

Often think about quite how desperate British journalists were to make the pun 'the IDS of March'.

When will my manuscript come home from the war?

I think you’ll find that the best translation of this passage in a language I don’t read is actually the one that most supports my argument.

Editing this long chapter from my book manuscript, I'm starting to think John Ray's observation applies: "He that uses many words for explaining any subject, doth, like the cuttlefish, hide himself for the most part, in his own ink".

Edinburgh UCU has voted to authorise strike action against management's proposed £140m cuts. 84% voted for strike action and 92% for action short of a strike on a 60%+ turnout.

What is political theory? Well, it’s like political philosophy, only I dress up what I think in some historical context instead of making a strained and elliptical argument for it.

It is right and holy that there should be some apprehension whenever sending an email.

Two decades on I still think about some of these entries regularly (e.g. "Someone who has actually been there"). Having read and thoroughly enjoyed All My Precious Madness at the weekend, it makes sense that this comes from the same mind.

I'll be presenting a paper at this seminar next Friday, June 6, in collaboration with @brunoleipold.com and with the kind support of @rshc.bsky.social. Looking forward to seeing you there! If you're interested, you can book now here www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/reassessin...
