True, but I think it's all of it. He needed to build support within the party. Instead, he figured he'd get 45% in the primaries and win because there were more candidates.

But he did spend years building up his support in the Party. Sanders didn't do that. He knew he would run again and he didn't work to broaden his appeal with party leaders.

Nixon lost in 1960 and then spent years building support in the Republican Party before running again in 1968. Did Sanders do much of anything between 2016 and 2020 to gain support from other elected Dems and Dem groups?
