I managed a few hours at Abberton this pm, causeways & hides only. I saw the Ring-necked Duck, 14 BN Grebe & 2 Spoonbill, but spent most time looking at the gulls. 3 Yellow-legged & 7 Caspians seen, including a German-ringed 1w Casp which had been seen in Kilnsea, Yorkshire last autumn #essexbirding

Close views of two Slavonian Grebe and eight Black-necked Grebe on Abberton Reservoir today, east of Layer de la Haye causeway. Also saw two Spoonbill, 1st w Caspian Gull, 22 Great White Egret and Smew. #EssexWildlife #EssexBirds

Visit to some Danbury EWT reserves in Essex, mainly to search for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (unsuccessfully). Singing Marsh Tit notable at Pheasanthouse reserve, otherwise expected species, Great Spots drumming in earnest #essexbirding #birds

In the US alone, golf courses occupy 2 million acres of sterile, moribund lawns. But now, from California to Scotland, they're being rewilded and are teeming with life – fantastic news for both nature and people! www.bbc.com/future/artic...

Exploited migrant farm workers in UK paid for picks, not hours. Workers not paid for in-work travel, time spent moving between workstations, team meetings, receiving instructions on equipment use. Employers violating employment rights. Need effective enforcement, not deregulation.

Breezy & chilly weather for our guided walk at Bradwell-on-Sea but some good birds including 2 PALE-BELLIED BRENTS, leucistic BRENT, male HEN HARRIER, KINGFISHER, 2 MED GULLS, BARN OWL, 40+ CORN BUNTING, RT DIVER and lots more. #essexbirding #BirdsSeenIn2025 #birds

UK competition regulator fines Citi, HSBC, Morgan Stanley, Royal Bank of Canada, Deutsche Bank £100m for breaching competition law. All have history of abuses. No one prosecuted, no personal fines. Puny fines don't deter, will be passed to customers.

Red = lowest ecological integrity. Ireland has the great honour of being probably *the* most ecologically trashed nation in all Europe. 🏆 🏆 🏆

Freedom of Movement was robbed from us by a successful Russian influence operation and the worst abuses of democracy in modern British history. Please repost if you want it restored.

There's a common path in the development of authoritarian or totalitarian regimes, regardless of whether they are overseen by Catholic Inquisitors, Protestant enforcers, monarchists, fascists, Nazis, Stalinists, Maoists .... First they eliminate words. Then they eliminate people.

"Sinn Féin won't travel to White House over Trump's policies." When a leader calls for straight-up ethnic cleansing (of Gaza), this is the *only* principled response. www.rte.ie/news/ireland...

Really cracks me up when someone addresses a letter to me like this, yet it still actually arrives (it's happened a good few times). Fair play to you, An Post!!

On this day, 19 years ago: Real Madrid 0-1 Arsenal - Henry 47' Arsenal made history as the first English team to defeat Real Madrid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. In the Champions League Round of 16, Thierry Henry netted a stunning goal and silenced the home crowd with a ‘shush’ celebration.

A lonely native willow stands defiantly, representing life, surrounded by contrasting sheep and sitka-induced ecological nothingness. The Irish countryside, epitomised. Our land is ripe for change. Ripe for rewilding 🌎

A young Hen Harrier, Red, has disappeared in suspicious circumstances. Police found no trace of the bird. This latest incident follows a clear pattern of Hen Harriers disappearing on driven grouse moors: it's time to license driven grouse shooting. More: community.rspb.org.uk/ourwork/b/in...

Society needs to start seeing natural ecosystems as a societal *necessity*, and be willing to pay for them. Unless that happens, nature loss will continue, eroding the very foundation of life and civilisation.

Poverty kills. Cancer death rates are 60% higher for people living in deprived UK areas compared with those in more affluent areas. 28,400 extra deaths due to deprivation, people seek comfort in smoking. Poor healthcare, late diagnosis, 'must work pressure' punishes the poor.

UK banks paid “advance commissions” to car dealers, encouraged them to push costlier loans to consumers. Now banks face a possible compensation bill of £44bn, which govt is trying to obstruct. Anything that banks have not mis-sold, as execs chase bonuses but bear no responsibility.

One minute you’re down on your luck bin raiding in Paisley, the next thing you’re sunning yourself on a Moroccan beach. www.bbc.com/news/article...

HSBC net zero goal delayed 20 years, as CEO offered 600% bonus. Bankers already live on another planet and are willing to let the earth burn to fuel their lust for profits. Shareholders don't care, customers have no representation on boards, regulators and govts let them wreak havoc.

There's a rumour that Nigel Farage is keeping his head down because he's off to a Trump cheerleading conference over the weekend. I’m afraid I’m being proved right- Farage is far more interested in Trump's success than British security. He is a bootlicker and a plastic patriot.

Support for lynx reintroduction is now at 61% in Scotland, and climbing. Those opposed are down to only 13%. Chances are, the vast majority of Irish people have still never even heard of this exquisite, ecologically important native cat. Let's change that!

This petition has almost reached its target of 50,000 signatures. Can you help get it over the line? You don't need to be a resident of NI - anyone, anywhere, who cares about protecting birds of prey, can sign it. 🦅🙏 raptorpersecutionuk.org/2025/02/13/p...

This #NationalNestboxWeek, a reminder that a little maintenance goes a long way. Whether it’s nesting season or a winter retreat, a well-kept nest box can be a safe space for birds all year round. Here’s how to keep yours in top shape every season... 👇🧵

Pollinator numbers are dropping due to the pesticides we use. Even though insects are so small, they have a huge impact and we need to protect them. Tell the UK government to protect our pollinators: act.gp/41dxd0E

Kamala was right. And it only took him less than 30 days to roll over for Putin.

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

UK inflation rate as measured by CPI rose to 3%. RPI hits 3.6%. Price of food, energy, water, rents, internet, phones rising at higher rate, hitting the less well-off the hardest. Govts can control inflation - end corporate profiteering, but they hit people. Need people-centred policies.

Magic Money Tree. UK govt to hand £130bn to Bank of England to pay stealth subsidy to banks. Govts gave £895bn QE to speculators, banks profited. Govt reversing QE, selling bonds at loss, covering BoE losses from rising interest rates and the unwinding of QE, banks make billions.

In 2019, RFK Jr visited Samoa to spread anti-vax lies, spurring a measles outbreak that led to the deaths of 83 people - mostly children. We can’t let that tragedy repeat in Texas. The MMR vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles. Let’s stop the spread. www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-m...

UK energy bills forecast to rise 5% from April. Add to this inflation-busting rises in water, phone, internet and more., people feel helpless. Can't grow economy with depleted household incomes. Must curb profiteering, impose windfall taxes. Ofgem protects companies, not people.

Kemi Badenoch says ‘western civilisation will be lost’ if Tory party fails. No introspection from a party that destroyed the UK economy, healthcare, public services, household income, illegally prorogued parliament, promoted social divisions, handed contracts to cronies Tories won't be missed.

Come on folks, let's try and clean up our wildlife and nature sites in Essex. Maybe start with your local patches. www.essexwt.org.uk/get-involved... #essexbirding

Note: you will NEVER find a human-planted tree that looks anything like this. Only natural processes, evolved over 100s of millions of years, produce such variety. Just another one of many reasons why natural regeneration, not planting, should be the default means of bringing back our lost forests.

Trump plan to enslave Ukraine. Demands $500bn “payback”, wants control of “mineral resources, oil and gas, ports, other infrastructure" in perpetuity, control economy. Ukraine must pay US before feeding its people. No penalty on Russia for the invasion. Politicians or gangsters? archive.ph/0El3f
