Ralph and l have had a good day of bookshelf re-organising therapy in the study.

Lecturing on Spanish Civil War in morning. Done my usual over prep but then penny dropped. Screw the slides, we are going to be talking proxy war, new aerial bombing technology and rise of Fascism. There are times when being a historian is of its time. Slava Ukraini.

I’m here to remind all that Martin Scorsese made the best ever film about JESUS, and the shit hot soundtrack was even better. youtu.be/XgyMzMkNlzA?...

Your average punter watching #BAFTA2025. That’s what’s his face, That’s her from that thing. Love him. You know, the guy from? She looks great. Who?

Nice to see Loch Sunart on #BBCCountryfile. Not all of my memories of that place so wholesome. When digging a Mesolithic shell midden on Risga Island in the loch way back when l picked up c.300 ticks. The district nurse was horrified. archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/library/browse…

Enjoyed giving talk on Great Escape to full house at Black Watch Museum last night. Honoured to have 104 yr old Lt Colonel Charlie A Cameron (Rtd) in front row. Served in Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Evacuated from Dunkirk, wounded at El Alamein, & awarded Military Cross in Italy.

Giving a talk on the Great Escape at the Black Watch museum in Perth tonight. It's one of my favourite venues. theblackwatch.co.uk/events/

I think Michael Mosley should be given a posthumous Knighthood. That guy did a whole world of good in a climate of negativity. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Found this a book yesterday. A gift for giving a history talk at a Philately congress a few years back. I might frame it.

Spent a rather nervous morning on roof of writing shed repairing storm damage. Managed to re-cover with felt tiles scattered by the wind. Love my new hammer stapler. Anyone need anything stapling?

Everyday now. Waking up in the UK wondering what insane policy Tango Hitler has unveiled overnight. This morning was the worst yet.

As l said, the clue was in the kit.

Trudeau was pretty washed up, now he’s the Canadian Churchill. Great work Tango Hitler.

After the engine cut out, a Dauntless returning to USS Yorktown flew erratically until the pilot was able to restart it. He called to his gunner: "I bet 50% of the people down there thought we were going to crash." The gunner answered: "50% of the people up here thought so too." #SeaStorySaturday

Name the film

#WW1 Western Front Podcast The fully-illustrated video of our chat with @simonverdegem.bsky.social about the incredible preservation of First World War trench archaeology of Flanders Fields and projects like Dig Hill 80 is out. It's haunting, inspirational and unmissable. youtu.be/EYUniJ_NZuo?...

BOTD 1925 Paul Newman. Crew of Avenger flying off USS Bunker Hill. Was grounded during invasion of Okinawa on in 1945 by illness of pilot. He lived but 396 crew of the carrier killed from Kamikaze attack. I saw him in Paris many years later & still cherish that moment.

Just broken a good tape measure trying to demonstrate 18’ long Scottish pike in the hall. Teaching Battle of Flodden (1513) tomorrow & have allowed it to take over weekend. A spectacular story though & hope l have enough time to add this at the end. www.bbc.com/news/uk-scot...

If Carlsberg did dioramas. Super work with Airfix ambulance by Paul Charles Maidment, nicked from FB

Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice is adorable. Not least because of the Tour de Force of Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland. Bit of a culture shock tonight though as l’ve only just finished loving Kiera Knightley killing folk in Black Doves.

Films where first 4 mins are best bit? Escape to Athena. Beautiful opening aerials around Athos monastery then cut to Schifrin’s wonderful music really kicking in with amazing 🚁 single take over sea, then Acropolis on Rhodes before closing in on action. youtu.be/lBeUEYx8Gj0?...

Have done this with the Festive edition of the Radio Times for as long as l can remember.

Another fabulous beach picnic. Even the sand was frozen. Topped off with a White Egret sighting (alas not close enough for a decent photo).

‘And you may watch us light up!’ The Man Who Would be King BBC2 3.10pm God’s holy trousers, it’s a corker of a movie.

Probably the scariest of these BBC offerings, and not M.R. James.

It’s come around again. Nothing like a diary to keep you up to date with how quickly time flies as the pages turn. Again, my new year’s resolution is to make the best use l can of that precious commodity.

A good day writing while Ralph kept an eye on the bad weather from his crow’s nest.

Sorry to hear Johnnie Walker has died. Had the privilege of being interviewed by him on his radio show when l made my first appearances on TV. A total gentleman. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The real killer moment in Evil Under the Sun #JaneBirkin

Really sorry to hear about death of John C. Barrett. As an archaeologist @uofglasgow.bsky.social he was an inspirational teacher when I was an undergrad student & the smartest of thinkers. If it wasn't for him I wouldn't be an academic. It was a privilege to have known him.

Crossed the bridge to Govan, where a weather-beaten Robert the Bruce tilts at his audience. The Lyceum cinema opened in 1938 but hasn’t shown a movie since 1981. Hopefully next year will see this wonderful old dream palace open its doors again.
