Reminded as I walked through the Field Museum this morning of the years when by 3 yr old son would race to this coelacanth as though it were an old friend. Those museum years when he was young were a huge piece of who he is today. We have to keep fighting for accessible, inclusive museums.

The most recent lecture I gave on Oak Origins at The Morton Arboretum was really nicely recorded and is available for free online. This is the fullest and cleanest version of the lecture I've given to date, with some new info. I hope you enjoy it. Feel free to share. vimeo.com/1057955943

It's the #CrabAZ that @franzanth.bsky.social has been waiting for: V is for Velolambrus... or DORITO CRAB!!! It's not "the" species he called a dorito, but I think these are even more dorito shaped. They are cryptic under rocks, mud, or seagrasses. 🦀🧪🦑

Hi! Thanks for all the follows. If you want to learn about my former lab, please check out this article from before i joined in 2023. With the cuts, 30% of us are gone and in my opinion, the program will face significant challenges. Our facility was one of a kind. www.bridgemi.com/michigan-env...

Imagine if a wealthy benefactor wanted to establish a Species Discovery Institute. For just $4k a month, you could feed a taxonomist AND give them time to describe new species…

Medicaid is not for sale. NASA is not for sale. The Post Office is not for sale. America is not for sale. We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

Dark Taxonomy: From unknown to ready for biomonitoring in 5 steps. By describing 120 species, most species of fungus gnats routinely caught in Malaise traps in Singapore now have names. Bees, butterflies and birds, make room for your new friends. Read here: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

I just had my first interview about a species I published and they asked “what’s it like to discover a new species?!” And I was like well it happens pretty much every day that I do IDs, I have about 300 of them in my refrigerator right now.

For decades, the US government has painstakingly kept American science #1 globally—and every facet of American life has improved because of it. The internet? Flu shot? Ozempic? All grew out of federally-funded research. Now all that's being dismantled. 1/ www.technologyreview.com/2025/02/21/1...

Reproductive freedom is at risk in Wisconsin. MAGA extremist Brad Schimel wants to enforce a 175-year-old abortion ban. We can protect abortion rights (and the liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court) by electing Susan Crawford. Take action: indivisible.org/scow...

IDing omaliines and I gotta say I've never seen genitalia this close to being an electric guitar

Barbs. Grunts. Bone caves. Dogs who got too close. Romance that goes hard. We got PORCUPINES, folks. #Erethizonology expert Dr. Tim Bean of Cal Poly is as charming an ologist you can get. Also, one word: porcupette. www.alieward.com/ologies/eret...

Our bryophyte curator (Wayne Lampa, MOR) went through his collections a few years ago and painstakingly rehydrated and photographed every one of them, redried them, refiled them. ✨New Waspaganda✨ Despite their demonization, Vespid wasps are hardworking ladies who work together to get it done & fulfill their niche (pollinating, hunting, defending). I believe they are powerful symbols for worker resistance & deserve more respect. Get it: Lindzeamays.com/printshop 🐡🕷️🐝🌱

We described this new species today: Orobanche andryalae, from the Canary Islands. Welcome to science you beautiful thing ✨

Walt Disney Presents A Film By David Lynch is a jarring arrangement of words.

. . . . . Taming tiny tigers: take two. Donated (Cal Acad. style) drawer of specimens, as received. The specimens were transferred to (USNM) trays; labels were rotated & trimmed as needed. One donated drawer down, 331 to go... 😬 #Curation . . . . .

Things in the US are really tough for both physical and social scientists right now. I would like to do an episode on the recent cuts to federal research and what they might mean for science and our communities. Do you know someone who could help me talk about these things on the podcast? DM me!

A teacher emailed me & said "My scientist didn't reply to me. My scientists ALWAYS reply to me! What the heck!". I was like "Well. Science is kinda crumbling. Friends/colleagues are losing their jobs or at least funding, & some are being told to cease all outside communications". She hadn't heard.

“Democrats seem to be waiting for Trump, Musk, and MAGA to naturally become unpopular, instead of working overtime to make them unpopular. We can’t wait. We need a unified, aggressive, and creative opposition in this country.” Read more from @leahgreenberg.bsky.social and @ezralevin.bsky.social. 👇

I lost my job at the National Science Foundation yesterday, along with 167 of my colleagues, including some dear friends. This was the best job I've ever had, and I thought it would be my last. The PI community has been sympathetic and supportive, without exception. I will miss working for you.

There were protests across the entire country today and I’ve barely seen it covered. This thread is full of them and there will be more in the future. If you cannot attend a protest, you can at least spread awareness and repost

Connecticut was out at The CT Capitol today.

Great to see. Protests in support of CDC workers and against illegal firings by the Trump administration in Atlanta today.

Psst: carcinization is not inevitable! R is for Raninoides, one of the best examples of DEcarcinization. It's a true crab, but its body is elongated and the abdomen sticks out. The wrench and spadelike appendages, and torpedolike body, are good for burrowing (see video, next skeet) #CrabAZ 🦀🧪🦑

Spent my time after work this afternoon playing matchmaker (giving a pair of rarely-seen wingless Zopheropteras gall wasps a ride on my finger as I delivered them to nice oak buds. For science. I want to see what kind of galls they make)

Excited by a new ID on an old #iNaturalist observation. These tiny wasps were swarming around the tomato plants in a vacant lot and I caught one ovipositing on an aphid. Turns out they are in subfamily Charipinae, and are hyperparasitic- targeting other wasps that parasitize these aphids. #insects
