I especially appreciated the question and answer about the tension between empathy and objectivity.

The musical Hamilton has been out for ten years, but only today did I notice the obvious, intended irony that, in the duel at the end, Alexander Hamilton does in fact throw away his shot.

He nails it.

Ok, I'm doing a version of this thread for 🧪 who are new to political conditions where info security is a safety issue: 1. Don't make public lists of people who are engaging in acts of resistance 2. Be weary of calls to advertise acts of subversion 3. Don't live post resistance meetings

I've known @tqthq.bsky.social since our days at the University of Washington and have always admired his teaching style and research. If you're a fan of @thebandcake.bsky.social, you'll appreciate his short belly/long tendon parody of their hit tune. #STEM #highereducation #musicmatters

Thanks to @maryguiden.bsky.social for writing this piece in which I am featured! www.higheredjobs.com/Articles/art...

Great letter from my colleagues @sbagen.bsky.social, @mjschlanger.bsky.social and other legal scholars across the country explaining why it is not necessary to start eliminating university programs because Trump

DOGE recommended firing workers at: -FDA, which oversees Neuralink -FAA, which oversees SpaceX -USAID, which probed Starlink -CFPB, which oversees Tesla's financing arm and a potential payment platform on X. "Conflict of interest" is a severe understatement.

I get the schadenfreude impulse, I really do. I just think that after the dopamine hit it goes nowhere. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/the-schade...

If you wanted to cut waste, fraud, and abuse, you would empower the inspectors general. If you wanted more waste, fraud, and abuse, you would fire them.

In the coming weeks, a lot of slow-on-the uptake folks are going to begin belatedly realizing Trump is both an inept moron and a dangerous autocrat. Our great civic challenge in these trying times will be calmly welcoming them aboard instead of primal-screaming in their faces.

This seems important and unambiguously evil. A literal erasing of trans people from a historical record. slate.com/news-and-pol...

People who voted Trump who are feeling pissed off right now about broken promises are an organizing opportunity, not a gloating opportunity

What these nihilistic vandals are doing to dismantle science & medicine—generations of expertise & public service & life improving benefits—is cultural revolution level national self harm. No foreign foe could inflict such brutal damage & senseless suffering on US so fast & effectively & unresisted.

How are y’all dealing with all this *waves arms around* and also continuing to do all the things you need to regularly do? Let’s share some strategies.

The blueberry pancake model of an ovary. Notice the ruptured follicle at the bottom.

Can we please not publicly make fun of how people -- even horrible people -- look? It's not cool when the Trump people do it, and "these white supremacists look like dweebs" is not a great argument against white supremacy.

Seen on the whiteboard this morning. Evidence of a student practicing the spelling of cranial nerves I-VI? Or evidence of old-school punishment for previous misspellings?

Yup. I spend large amounts of time thinking of how to complete sentences like "I hope this email finds you ________" in slightly off-kilter, slightly amusing ways.

Understand this: by trying to kill the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Elon Musk and Russ Vought are trying to make it easier for big banks to cheat you. It’s another way the Trump administration wants to reward the rich and powerful while hurting working people.

I think Bluesky has now proven itself the new Twitter. It's melting down over Trump idiocies just as Twitter used to. Probably in ways that seem overheated to casual observers, but (this time, at least) are not. Here's hoping American biomedical research and DEI efforts can survive this onslaught.

Our current health care system is not designed to provide quality care to all people. It is designed to make huge profits for insurance & drug companies. In that sense, the system is working very well. But it is not working for the average American. We need Medicare for All.

My depressing thought for the day: it seems increasingly inevitable that quite soon, Trump decides to simply disregard a court finding that some of his actions are illegal or unconstitutional. Impeachment is attempted & fails thanks to loyal Republicans. At which point there are no good options.

Yeah so the Constitution isn’t really in effect right now

The champions of Free Speech are now forcing scientists to retract submitted publications until they can be checked for the appearance of “forbidden terms.”

From my answer key to today's Human Physiology exam. It's possible that the Seattle winter is starting to get to me.

I don't normally feel much empathy for raccoons, but . . . this morning, commuting into Everett in the dark, I saw one darting back and forth across Broadway as if confused or flustered. Nearby in the road lay a dead raccoon, presumably a friend or mate.

I wonder how long it will take for the NSF to review its $9 billion budget.

20 years after my first faculty NSF science education proposal, I finally got one (as Co-PI) . . . and now this. *sigh* Well, it was nice being funded for the last 4 months. Enough time to recruit subjects, though not enough time to pay them.

Continuing a tradition that we started in 2019, here's Leila Zelnick ending her @uwnephrology.bsky.social Renal Grand Grounds talk with a musical recap written by me -- this one based on "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds from the movie The Breakfast Club (1985).

Remember, instructors, this is what happens when your students don't quite understand what you want from them. Happy MLK Weekend!

I find it hilarious when I have two versions of a paper, one of which has a filename ending in "clean." This distinguishes this version from the version where the redlining/markup has been left in -- but I like to imagine that it's the version where I've deleted all of the f-bombs.
