If you burn down a forest, you don't miss out on lumber for just that season. You have to replant all the trees, nurture them, and wait for them to grow.
The science and research budget cuts happening now are wanton, senseless arson. Recovery, if it ever happens, will take generations.

It should be a no-brainer…

Red light cameras can be considered a pretty effective safety measure. While in some locations they can result in an increase in a small crashes, the increase is from rear end crashes, which have far lower injury and fatality rates than the angle crashes red light camera significantly reduce.

Enforcing speed is not the same as a police state. Plenty of other countries do it effectively. For example, speed cameras are an incredibly effective tool at managing speeding AND reducing crashes.

This is just a bad strawman. Why would enforced speed result in 80 mph in parking lots? This makes zero sense.

Speed... as well as the implications of speed. Implications that the enforcement of speed would mitigate.

It seems you missed the key point. Speeding is dangerous because the faster you go, the further you travel while you perceive and react to a hazard. My example demonstrated that. Speeding means your speed at impact will be higher, increasing the chance of an injury or fatality.

The faster you go, the less time you have to perceive and react to a potential issue. I sketched a quick example where someone steps into the road 250ft in front of a vehicle on a road with a 35mph limit. If you did just 10mph over the limit, you would hit them at 34mph instead of stopping.

They have zero issues with being hypocrites. That’s the problem. Democrats care, Republicans don’t.

While your city sounds like it has room for improvement, it’s still better than relying on the subjective enforcement and biases of police.
Cameras also reduce crashes, meaning safer streets for those people you mentioned (who are disproportionately victims of traffic violence).

They’ve been proven to be pretty effective at reducing crashes while reducing biases of police enforcement.

The end being achieved is fewer crashes.
