He is lying. The russians are mocking him and cocky, they are calling his bluff because they know he is willing to just abandon Ukraine.

Yes. While there are absolutely things Democrats can and must do to slow, obstruct, etc, GOP hold both House and Senate majorities, severely limiting our options. Johnson and Thune are handing over the own keys and relinquishing their own power. Even for the cynics this should be a shock.

As China continues to give money and projects to countries to gain influence, we are shutting down our agencies that do that. China is eating our lunch and Trump is the reason. Sorry folks, if you don’t see it you don’t understand how the world works. Period

I'm glad that America is doing real classic end of empire stuff. A king who is visibly losing his mind declaring a war based on a dream he had. Greedy courtiers feuding over access to the treasury. Some looks are timeless.

If it’s illegal, then they weren’t fired. (To be clear: I do not take issue with the QT at all, I’m grateful that she shared this news. But workers affected by these illegal actions should go to court, stat.)

Rubio knows better than this. "The Chinese" do *not* run the Canal. The US is *not* being unfairly charged for transit. (fallows.substack.com/p/panama-is-...) Which is worse: Trump, who obviously doesn't know these things? Or Rubio, who does?

Jesus Christ Democrats, what you need to do is CONVEY A SENSE OF CRISIS. That's because THERE IS AN ACTUAL CRISIS GOING ON. So the kinds of things you would ordinarily do? Press releases, tweets about economic issues, normal congressional business? YOU CANNOT JUST DO THOSE THINGS.

What folks are getting a tough lesson in right now: Institutions are people. They are not abstract forces that exist as firewalls or safeguards. They are just people who play a role and who perhaps have abided by norms, but whose decisions minute to minute shape the role those institutions play.

Mad king era fr fr

Starting trade wars to make it easier to take over the government was literally the plot to the Star Wars prequels.

We’re gonna look back on black box social media like we look back now on lead pipes.

genuinely rage-inducing to see leftists catastrophizing about police doom and how unsafe it is to protest under trump. yeah i thought it was dangerous too. that's why i didn't want this to happen: because i had committed to do this anyway.

I really don’t think it’s happenstance that pretty much every remaining institutional safeguard broke down within 15 years of Citizens United

cannot be said enough that for a decade a critical number of americans have simply refused to accept that he means what he says

I think it already is. But seriously. Don’t call them names. We want the door open for them when they realize the mistake they made. We are for a better America. Not a vindictive America

Asking tough questions is how you deal with politicians. Finding solutions is how you deal with voters

The most surreal and maddening feature of the campaign was that everyone agreed that high prices were the main issue but the guy explicitly, consistently running on a platform of raising everyone’s prices won voters most concerned about high prices. We hammered this time and time again and yet.

The exact same story, covered two different ways. Don’t listen to the people who say there’s no better way to communicate urgency than what our political elites are doing

Again, I don’t understand how threatening the territorial sovereignty of, & starting trade wars on the basis of national security laws with, our closest ally in the world is not an immediate presidency-ending scandal. We are deeply unserious country whose constitution has completely failed.

Idgaf I’m still fighting for guaranteed healthcare. Aspiration is the answer. Not just “we’re not the bad guys.” We need something more meaningful than that. I want a future worth fighting for. They have no vision. We do. Lean into our strengths and knock them out. 👊🏽

it is honestly kind of striking to me that the founders were basically on target re: “things that could end our republic”

i can wreck up a whole shop of Faberge eggs in like thirty seconds if you give me a hammer but i'm not sure i could make another one given the rest of my life

The January 6th attack on American institutions succeeded. It took four years, but they won.

Tweeting this two days after the election went so hard

They’re purging the DOJ.

Generally not a great sign when the judge is breaking out the bold + ital text to yell at you with a cite simply straight to the Constitution itself.

they think they can do all of this in a weekend. they cannot. sign up, show up this sunday. get ready to show up a lot more.

orban also won a supermajority which permitted him to rewrite the entire constitution weeks into his presidency. trump has a two-seat majority in the house

Hey, so—sharing confident predictions that we’re all doomed? Not good for anyone. These people are malicious but stupid and not nearly as powerful as they think are, and literally nothing helps them as much as conveying the inevitability of their success.

it doesn't actually matter whether the Democrats can *actually* do much in Congress to stop Trump tbh. they need to behave like an absolutely rabid opposition party either way, because the party has to restructure itself around the single mission of destroying these fuckers

we'll see - probably in the next week or so - who has a future in the democratic party and who doesn't

Elon’s lieutenants demanded access to the government’s payment system and all the data therein. A longtime civil servant refused. He was put on administrative leave, and is now out. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/31/u...

Today, Trump has: -indicated he'll purge the FBI of everyone who isn't a fanatical loyalist -allowed his crony to seize all government funding in an effective coup -ripped the entire federal government off the internet Today, Democrats have: -done nothing -said nothing -tweeted about egg prices

Yes, they are violating the law. They are also responsible for enforcing the law, which they won't do. Therefore, law enforcement and preservation of the Republic will require either external enforcement from non-Trump-aligned government elements or acceptance of autocracy. Those are the choices.

However much we yell at the newspaper it’s not enough.

Palpatine and Vader: [Murder all Jedi, including younglings, and plunge Galaxy into decades of martial law] Schumer: The price of blue milk will be slightly higher next week.

This is a *remarkable* message. Although phrased politely and with no hint of disobedience, Acting FBI Director Driscoll is making clear to all that he's not onboard with Trump's purge. I would expect him to be removed from his position if they can find someone more willing to do Trump's bidding.

hey question, is this bad?

I am so goddamn mad. A friend who’s been FISHING BODIES OUT OF THE POTOMAC appears to be in the Trump purges today.

hate to say it...but

The American people spoke, and they wanted Elon Musk to be able to share Americans’ personal information from government databases to whatever 19 year old gamers he’s trying to impress on Discord

they are stealing data from the american people and depriving us of the transparency that we are entitled to by law. none of this is legal and not a single federal employee has any reason to comply.

Trump indicates he's "already talking" with Putin but adds, "I just don't want to say that"

One thing that is so enraging is how Trump spent the entire campaign promising he wouldn’t do any of this stuff, immediately did it, and both media and Democrats are like “well what can we do? he clearly has a mandate to do this”
