I’m not sure what you mean? The labels have never changed, only the instructions for how to get them.

Unfortunately I don’t have any control over how they appear on Bluesky. There will be a standard way of flagging a skeet in a feed as an ad *eventually,* but they haven’t added support for it yet so I require advertisers to include a hashtag like #/ad, #/sponsored, or #/promotion.

Deffo non-political. The day I let a political ad into the feed I hope somebody finds me and shoots me.

Yeah, we’ve deffo seen that. I tried including “Steamworks” at one point.
Turns out that’s also the name of a chain of gay adult clubs. We had some really inappropriate skeets for just a minute. 😅

Nah, actual ads in the game dev feed. 😅

Delightful. That’s pretty much the experience I was hoping for. 🥰

Perfect. Thankies! 🥰

Nope, they’re all tagged appropriately! I won’t allow them into the feed otherwise. 😉

Honestly, that's the best response I could have hoped for. ❤️
FWIW, the only campaign currently running is for UNICEF. If you've seen their skeets in the game dev feed, you've seen an ad.

Seems like it'd be cool to collaborate on user verification here on Bluesky (I run the Games Industry Labeler, @ozone.birb.house). Y'all feel free to reach out if there's a possibility here. 🥰

This would be awesome, actually. 😍

These 2 sleets couldn’t be more perfectly placed. 🤣

Yeeeeeah! I’ve been busy all day so mine just started downloading games. It’s gonna be a minute. 😅

I think the harm is more about relevance than anything. If the ads seem out of place (e.g., Squarespace or NordVPN) and include hashtags, that's harmful. But if, for example, a game engine submits an ad about a huge new update? That's extremely relevant.
comment in response to

If anything, I'm _more likely_ to accept ads with #/ GameDev in them because they're more likely to be relevant. If they're using the hashtag, the skeet would be appearing in the hashtag feed and other custom feeds anyway.

I see what you mean, but I don't think that's realistic. Ads in this context are just skeets from other accounts. Those account managers suggest a campaign to me with the relevant skeets, and I determine if it's appropriate for the feed.

These are all good points. I don't claim to be the world's best communicator, so I appreciate the feedback. I'll try to write a new version of the notice today that's clearer. Mind if I reach out for direct feedback?

Alternator, starter, and ignition are unimportant since I won’t be touching them. Everything in this diagram is new hardware EXCEPT the starter battery.
The two boxes are bus bars (distributors? I dunno what they’re called). Basically just a box of terminals.

I don’t expect to please everybody, but damn you’re angry. I imagine you'll be looking for new feeds, tho, and I maintain a list of games industry feeds. I believe all the feeds on this list with the exception of my Game Dev feed are ad-free. Best of luck to you. 🤷🏻♂️

I appreciate it. Also, sorry to be arguing with Ben in your replies. It’s all ground he and I have already tread, so I’m gonna leave it.
Also also, I’m gonna add your Indie Games feed to my living list thread. I actually thought it was already on there. 😅

Finally, you're right about the cost. I've previously invested a good chunk of cash in building, experimenting, and testing my feeds, and I'd like to recoup that. I still invest a ton of time into the community here on Bluesky, and I don't think it's unreasonable to find ways to support that work. 🤷🏻♂️

Second, there were a handful of people who said it was a bad idea. A lot of others said they were fine with it. The majority of responders, however, were tenuous about the idea, saying they were okay with ads as long as they adhered to the guidelines I had set.

First: there are absolutely other feeds that offer similar content and are ad-free. In fact, I used to maintain a list of games industry feeds (I technically still do, I just haven't dug into other feeds in a while) that's linked from my orientation packet.

Gotta survive somehow. If you're looking for a starting point, tho, I maintain a list of games industry feeds. I believe all the feeds on the list with the exception of my Game Dev feed are ad-free. 👋🏻

LUL, more power to you. I'm not going to be removing the requirement for advertisers to have a hashtag in the skeet, which means this solution will always work. 🤷🏻♂️
Just remember, this sort of stuff is hostile to feed creators. There are plenty of other feeds. I'd recommend using those instead.

By the way, if you're interested in advertising to the game dev community on Bluesky, you can submit an ad campaign via Graze. 😉

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Don't get me wrong, tho... there may be exceptions. Would Game Dev Tycoon be appropriate? I'd have to think _really_ hard about it. 😝

Patrick, you snake! Trying to steal my audience! /s
Fr tho, I get it. I really, really hope to see a decent uptake on the Patreon. If there's enough support there, I don't even need to run ads. Historically, tho, donations have been pretty lackluster. I suppose we'll see. 🤷🏻♂️
