Actually after all that about prewriting stuff I neglected to mention what I actually use. Lists are first (make a big list of ideas, start ordering/grouping bullet points to organize things, at this stage, everything goes in the pot/no bad ideas) then I start refining from there.

More prewriting/outlining thoughts: things made a lot more sense for me once I started applying some kind of narrative structure to my longer writing. I never take it as gospel but knowing how to pace a 3 or 5 act story / knowing the Hero's Journey for character arcs really helps build scaffolding.

What writing thing have you fully 180'd on? I used to think prewriting/outlining was a waste of time then I figured out how to make a process that worked for how I write... It makes my writing flow so much easier and I feel like I get stuck less in the space between scenes.
