I think Calgary is great, most of the time. Trying to stay positive and curious. I love my family, travel, books, data and all things nerdy. Have a love-hate relationship with politics.

#maddow Science break. This kayaker gets approached by an otter every time he visits a lake. The otter was orphaned after the mother was in an accident, and the man helped it throughout it's rehabilitation process to later release it back into the wild. Volume up.🔊

The way to get away with political scandals as a politician isn't to carefully cover-up 1 scandal, it's to do 5000 scandals in public every day.

Mian is the latest councillor to signal no desire to run for re-election this October. “It’s just really exhausting when you’re someone who wants to get things done and feels like you’re constantly fighting an uphill battle," she told LWC. #yyc #yyccc #calgary

No private sector business would take on a project where they assume all the risk and have no say regarding the design

A big mistake by city council. Calgary will be regretting this for generations #yyccc #Calgary

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers. This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder. Auschwitz took time.

Excellent NYT interview with the outgoing U.S. ambassador to Hungary. This is a key insight!

Ten weeks after a cyber attack, Calgary Public Libraries are now back to full force. DAILY . . . TWENTY THOUSAND people visit the various Calgary public libraries. Congrats to all the worker bees who made the comeback possible AND the patient patrons who stood by them all.

What an amazing experience for these students!

I wish my kids got along as well as my cats!

This is why we call her our potato cat. And yes, I am sometimes insanely jealous of her life.

This is a must view video. The rise of death threats and hate harassment over the last 4 years has been shocking. The targeting of school board officials, politicians, municipal leaders is an open threat to democracy because it targets people who dare step up to serve.

Happy new year in 2025. In 2025 I ask that you practice kindness even the smallest act may mean a great deal. Most often it will cost you nothing but a few minutes of your time and is a part of healing our own spirits and souls.

If people would just have even the barest idea of what guided the main religions of the world then perhaps these religious wars, and hatred could finally stop & It's not religions that are the problem it's evil men who twist them to suit their own purposes & use them as weapons that are the problem

“My faith demands — this is not optional — my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference,” Carter once said.

Just read the response from Costco to shareholders requesting it back down from DEI. It was glorious. It begins "Our Board has considered this proposal and believes … an enterprise rooted in respect and inclusion is appropriate and necessary." and gets better. A happy investor #diversityandinclusion

this is an excellent example of how important *practice* is over theory. pretty much every religion preaches that you should help the poor. most of them do it in patches and places (lots of Unitarian soup kitchens near me.). But Sikhism makes the langar a core part of ritual practice.

NEW: Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek along with Couns. Andre Chabot and Peter Demong have released this joint statement on Green Line. They're raising concerns over the omission of a "detailed constructability review" and a "structural analysis" from in the AECOM report.

Great thread summary of the public portion of today’s Green Line discussion.

Good reminder during the holidays of what can be recycled and what can’t in Calgary. And please don’t ever put electronics or anything with batteries (even tiny ones!) in your blue bin. It’s a fire hazard. calgary.ctvnews.ca/tear-test-st...

Medical historian here to remind you of the benefits of #vaccines! This is the final stage of tetanus when nerves fire continuously & body contorts into agonizing posture known as opisthotonus. The mastication muscles clamp down to form the hallmark lockjaw. A vaccine didn't appear until 1924.

Minister Dreeshen doing a #greenlineyyc victory lap after drawing a longer line on a map is certainly a choice. Calgarians are left with far more questions than answers about design & cost. Not giving #yyccc the AECOM report shows this is all about politics livewirecalgary.com/2024/12/13/p...

I keep reading that this is a place for kinder people, but gentle souls have always been among us. We just couldn’t hear them anymore. Perhaps our gathering here is proof that we missed those voices. What a wonderful thing to believe about ourselves. It can be a bold move to choose kindness.

I’m all in for 2025. Friday night, it was such fun to celebrate the incredible volunteers who got us here & all of those who continue to stand by my side. The work isn’t done — so let’s continue building a thriving, safe, and affordable Calgary together. — Jyoti

I am proud of our Mayor. It means more to me that she is recognized by a “niche” magazine that actually understands the role of municipalities and Mayors. She doesn’t deserve the vitriol that she is continuously subjected to.
