Where do NYPD officers work the most paid detail shifts? Burlington Coat Factory paid cops to work 1,200 shifts protecting their property. This data is somewhat dated and is a snapshot of Jan/Feb 2023 via an openrecords request.

“It is a clear gesture of white men wanting to control urban areas. It’s a strategic move to try to take away accountability and transparency,”

THREAD: Last year, ProPublica started receiving tips from an unusual kind of source: flight attendants. They said they'd worked on deportation flights for ICE, and they could tell us what it was really like on board. 1/

hell yes king

In Oregon, 4,000+ defendants facing criminal charges have no attorneys due to a public defender shortage, incl 400+ ppl who've waited 3+ months for a lawyer. The state's new "war on drugs" law is worsening the crisis, with cops now arresting + jailing thousands of drug users for minor possession:

chat what does it mean about my mental health when i have listened to The Winner Takes It All - From “Mamma Mia!” (Meryl Streep) 25 times in the last day

Mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani has unveiled a public safety plan centered on launching a new city agency tasked with using non-police responses to tackle issues like mental illness. His envisioned "Department of Community Safety" would have a $1.1B budget. www.nydailynews.com/2025/04/01/n...

not one cis person wished me a happy TDOV and i think legally they all now owe me five dollars

I was on EVERY email invite for the coalition and I can tell you that VOTE was as well. They were in that water. The LA Dems were NOT. The credit truly goes to the Vera Institute of Louisiana

This has been some good news in the midst of a barrage of awful news. The people do not want none of the shit they been pushing. They just want jobs and groceries that don’t take their arms and their legs.

The “No to them all, y’all” campaign absolutely crushed

Jeff Landry blaming “Soros funded liberals” for an almost 70% defeat on every amendment. Meanwhile the coalition meetings for NO on 3 started last fucking summer and were the result of nothing but grassroots work

everything is very hard and scary these days, but some mornings you get to wake up and appreciate that jeff landry’s nightmare agenda got absolutely creamed by the people of louisiana. it is beautiful to watch fascists fail — and to have real hope it’s going to keep happening.

Tried to make sense of what’s been happening on campuses these past few weeks for @motherjones.com www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

A criminal justice reformer in Louisiana regrets that a measure on Saturday's ballot would balloon adult courts: “It opens a pathway for the legislature to send more kids of any age to the adult system for any time, for any violent or non violent crime." boltsmag.org/louisia...

If you're a journalist in the US and you're not speaking out against the ongoing killing of Palestinian journalists, at record levels, by a US-funded foreign military, then you should hang your head in shame.

NEW: An investigation into how New York City's law enforcement officials pushed a narrative that a mysterious and deadly Venezuelan gang was running amok, despite little evidence to back it up, and helped the Trump admin invoke the Alien Enemies Act. hellgatenyc.com/eric-adams-n...

Iowa Senate passes bill banning cities from establishing citizen review boards for police. Happened here in Tennessee, too. Deep red legislatures are nullifying the will of city residents to hold bad cops accountable. (Via @awkword.bsky.social) www.rawstory.com/iowa-senate-...

Imagine looking at the world right now and making these your priorities.

People think being small will keep them safe. It won't. The reason we know who Mahmoud Kahlil is is because he was loud. Do you think he's the only person the administration has tried to disappear? He's just one of the first we've noticed

‘No Way to Please Everyone’ Says Only University Where Students Are Regularly Kidnapped

Trump threatens to put American citizens on deportation flights to a slave prison in El Salvador

I think all the sexual assault allegations alone should be disqualifying, but if that doesn't do it for you then the COVID deaths and throttling of testing should, and if that still doesn't do it for you then "empowered the state GOP in the senate and is backed by MAGA money" really fucking should

"[I]f families of dead migrants mourn publicly, if undeterred journalists get the story, will Americans care?" "The death of children can—sometimes, in the right conditions—provoke outrage. Few will ever care when adult men die in the deportation machine." @jherrerx.bsky.social #uspol #usa

‘Our hopes are gone’: Gaza faces fresh devastation as ceasefire collapses

wrote about how phoneworld is killing our political imaginary and making us profoundly miserable in this, a moment when we need to be stronger than ever www.late-review.com/p/the-eterna...

NEW for @sfchronicle.com: A study dropped today showing that in San Francisco, overdoses increase in areas where police have seized drugs. We're seeing this in real time: As law enforcement efforts have ramped up in recent months, fatal overdoses have risen. That's not a coincidence. (gift link)

for @teenvogue.com, Columbia journalism student Anvee Bhutani spoke to people who have known the disappeared Mahmoud Khalil at different points in his life — aid workers, friends, fellow activists — who describe a deeply committed, compassionate organizer who saw education as a way to serve others.

Must read: Mahmoud Khalil speaks out for the first time since his arrest by the Trump administration in an exclusive letter, dictated over the phone to his family, from ICE detention in Louisiana.

NEW from me: Some U.S. citizens have already been caught up in Trump's immigration dragnet. More will be. A side note: more reports of citizens detained by immigration officials emerged even as we prepped this story for publication. For @propublica.org www.propublica.org/article/more...

Totally agree with this. Flying a person to a third country that they may never have been to, directly into a prison where they are going to be forced to do hard labor, is not a deportation; it's something else entirely.

NEW: For @thenation.com and @typeinvestigations.org: I interviewed several attorneys in the Md area whose clients were held in ICE field office processing cells -- meant for less than a 12-hour hold -- for several days without beds, showers, medication. www.typeinvestigations.org/news/2025/03...

They claim they can snatch people up, put them on planes, and deport them to a country run by an authoritarian, where those people will be forced to work slave labor at an inhumane prison. All without due process, and in defiance of federal courts. The hypotheticals are over. This is the nightmare.

This part requires particular emphasis. The whole goddamn point of judicial process is to ensure---both for the individual and the public at large---that the state is actually doing what it says it's doing and to the right people.

My workplace has become ground zero for American fascism. If we allow Mahmoud’s abduction to go unchallenged, we allow the end of democracy as we know it. New from me for @zeteo.com: zeteo.com/p/i-am-jewis...

In this interview Schumer says he agrees with Trump’s decision to pull $400 million from Columbia. A university in his own state. And he’s unconcerned about the unlawful arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, one of his constituents. He is a traitor who needs to resign.

The headline really sanitizes what they did to this guy. Getting stripped naked, inadequate food, sleep deprivation sounds more like war on terror ear rendition than "interrogation."

Some of the 1000 things that happened in the past 24 hrs: -video of Mahmoud Khalil's arrest release -2nd person involved in campus protests detained by ICE -Columbia expels students involved in Hind Hall occupation -DHS searched 2 student residences with warrants.  www.thecity.nyc/2025/03/14/t...

🧵 IN SHOCKING MOVE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY FIRES UNION PRESIDENT ONE DAY BEFORE CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS BEGIN, IN FURTHER CRACKDOWN ON FREE SPEECH

I’m told this is a real letter. It basically says, “We’ll destroy Columbia unless you destroy it first.”

Columbia University admins warned international journalism students to avoid publishing work on Gaza, Ukraine, and protests after a pro-Palestinian activist's arrest, saying their freedom and academic future could be at risk. “Nobody can protect you.” www.nytimes.com/2025/03/12/n...

“The night of his detainment, there was a call to action among students, about how we can help with this threat from ICE. Mahmoud was one of the first people to respond and ask, ‘How can I help?’” Hours later, he was arrested. By my friend @hurwitz.bsky.social www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

"Border Czar" Tom Homan is in Albany supporting anti-immigrant legislation. "NY State Corrections guards, I'm with you," he says to start. The carceral state, police, detention, and deportation -- all parts of the same fascistic apparatus. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb45...

NEW INVESTIGATION from me: There's a secretive, and frequently abusive unit of the NYPD that's tight w/ Mayor Eric Adams How tight? Well, the unit's leaders bought special body-cams that can live-stream footage to select users. Then they gave access to the mayor www.propublica.org/article/eric...
